Imagen de apoyo de Citadels in Conflict

Citadels in Conflict

Por: Santiago Escobar Jaramillo | Fecha: 2008

This dissertation ‘Citadels in Conflict’ wants to show how the conceptual process of photography goes from reality to representation by models, but also how representations of these models acquire a new significance, the reality of virtualism and illusion. To use installations or interact with models is to invent imaginaries –or to call memories–that could be placed on a tangible base… and later photographed. I want to reflect on imaginary cities and the utopia of war and displacement, picturing each photo as a citadel. The constructed models accompanying this text are understood as citadels, for they include –sometimes randomly– all social, cultural and physical variables that cities have, or as ‘imitations of life’. A metaphor of the varied and ironic glances a desplazado could get when arriving in cities or any other urban places. Therefore, the unexpected citizen dwells inside a citadel in conflict. The phenomena of war and forced displacement are mapping new cities in Colombia in sad and iconic ways as satirised in these sixteen images.

Affordable and productive housing to (re)-densify the center of Bogota = Vivienda asequible y productiva para (re)-densificar el centro de Bogotá

Por: Diego Felipe Monsalve Fernández | Fecha: 2013

Although it has been in the center of political debates for years, the growing Social Housing deficit in Colombia, particularly Bogotá, has not yet found a permanent and sustainable long term solution. The internal conflict has forced millions of people to migrate into larger cities and, while the center of Bogotá presents a low population density, the less accessible and less service-supplied outskirts are overcrowding with newcomers. This research strives to understand the dynamics that have shaped the city profile allocating low income households on the peripheries while lowering the population in the city center. It will propose architectural tools to be applied within the Bogota’s current Mayor’s plan for the city center re-densification trough social housing. The research will be supported on the description of urban phenomena such as the city growth towards the periphery, internal forced migrations and social housing allocations dynamics. It will also explore case studies for contemporary Social Housing in urban centralities,as well as the social principles described in the Mayor’s Plan. The research identifies key tools to propose affordable and sustainable quality Social Housing that would become a platform for social interaction and sets the bases to invert a negative process and reduce the gap of housing inequality in Bogotá.

Remembering Wartime Violence. Experiences Of Teachers And Students From Secondary Schools In Bogota = Recordando la violencia en tiempos de guerra. Experiencias de docentes y estudiantes en colegios públicos de Bogotá

This study is about the experiences of teachers and students in the production of memory about past violence, and how they struggle to articulate these memories with present concerns and their expectations about the future. In doing this, they rely on some social discourses such as learning lessons from the past which has the potential to offer a better future free from violence and other social problems, an idea commonly attributed to the philosopher George Santayana (1095). To find information about this I conducted research where the voices of the participants are highlighted, and their ‘framings’ of the past related to dominant ideas and a range of literature about collective remembering. The goal is both to explore experiences, and to reflect on theorizing about the role of the past and of memory construction in the lives of educative actors. One of the key findings is that when they refer to aspects of the past, these actors do so to relate this to their present politics of everyday life. In consequence, it is shown that memory interrelates with the past, the present and the future and can be described as walking a thin line between these three temporal dimensions. Those interviewed also considered that their work could contribute to sustainable peace, but also insisted that structural violence required reforms beyond a peace agreement, to tackle root causes of social injustice, by reducing poverty and exclusion. The contribution of this research brings the voices of these relevant social actors to the forefront with the understanding of the contradictions, which impose an unusual context where the production of memory has to coexist with different forms of mutually reinforced violence.

Mixing surround sound in headphones = Mezclando en formato surround por medio de audífonos

Por: Alejandro Quintero Montero | Fecha: 2013

Mixing sound in headphones has always been a very attractive idea. They are portable, allow for surgical listening and are very affordable when compared to the cost of an adequately treated mixing room equipped with high-fidelity loudspeakers. The approach in this project was to design a workflow permitting to mix in surround format while monitoring through headphones. By reproducing the filtering responsible for accurate localization of sounds that occurs in the human auditory system using Binaural technology, a portable “virtual mixing studio” was designed and employed in the creation of three surround soundtracks for film material. Chapter 1 of this paper gives a description of the 5.1 surround system features and Binaural technology. Chapter 2 outlines the tools used to design a workflow allowing to produce and render a mix in 5.1 format. Chapter 3 describes the process of creating a 5.1 mix while monitoring through headphones. Chapter 4 provides a description of a listening experiment: aims, method, result, and discussion.

Positive wake–up–call contagion: New prospects for latin american bonds market after the greek debt crisis = Llamado de atencion a un contagio positivo: Nuevas perspectivas para el mercado de bonos latinoamericanos después de la crisis de deuda griega

Por: Alexandra Díaz Montenegro | Fecha: 2013

Recently, Latin American countries have experienced a series of upgrades in their sovereign credit ratings that are reflecting the region’s appeal for sovereign portfolio managers around the globe. Paradoxically, Latin American economies have shown strong economic fundamentals during the whole last decade and did not experienced any significant local common shock during 2009 - 2012, years in which credit agencies started upgrading the ratings of the region. Given these facts a valid question that springs up is which circumstances triggered the change in perception over the region’s creditworthiness during the last years. In this document I intend to explore a possible explanation to this change in risk perception, which consists in a positive wake–up-call contagion generated after the 2009 Greek debt crisis. The thesis will follow the methodology proposed in Giordano, Pericolli and Tomassino (2012), in which an analysis of contagion was conducted exclusively over developed European countries. Estimations show robust evidence of positive wake – up – call contagion towards the Latin American region. This outcome confirms that pricing of Latin American sovereign bonds in international financial markets is finally acknowledging the efforts of Latin American economies in correcting fiscal imbalances, implementing inflation targeting regimes and creating capital buffers to counter the effects of new coming local and international crises.

The origin of the large-scale structure in the Universe: theoretical and statistical aspects = El origen de la estructura a gran escala en el Universo: aspectos teóricos y estadísticos

Por: Yeinzon Rodríguez García | Fecha: 2005

We review some theoretical and statistical aspects of the origin of the large-scale structure in the Universe, in view of the two most widely known and accepted scenarios: the inflaton and the curvaton scenarios. Among the theoretical aspects, we point out the impossibility of having a low inflationary energy scale in the simplest curvaton model. A couple of modifications to the simplest setup are explored, corresponding to the implementation of a second (thermal) inflationary period whose end makes the curvaton field `heavy', triggering either its oscillations or immediate decay. Low scale inflation is then possible to attain with H_\ast being as low as 1 TeV. Among the statistical aspects, we study the bispectrum B_\zeta(k_1,k_2,k_3) of the primordial curvature perturbation \zeta whose normalisation \fnl gives information about the level of non-gaussianity in \zeta. In connection with \fnl, several conserved and/or gauge invariant quantities described as the second-order curvature perturbation have been given in the literature. We review each of these quantities showing how to interpret one in terms of the others, and analyze the respective expected \fnl in both the inflaton and the curvaton scenarios as well as in other less known models for the generation of primordial perturbations and/or non-gaussianities. The \delta N formalism turns out to be a powerful technique to compute \fnl in multi-component slow-roll inflation, as the knowledge of the evolution of some family of unperturbed universes is the only requirement. We present for the first time this formalism and apply it to selected examples.

Inclusive growth, inequality and the role of land in rural development in Brazil = Crecimiento inclusivo, inequidad y el rol de la tierra en el desarrollo rural de Brasil

Por: Luisa Fernanda Mendoza Berrío | Fecha: 2015

This paper explores the relationship between land inequality and inclusive growth in light of land policies for growth and poverty reduction. Contrasting traditional redistribution with inclusive rural growth shows the importance of land as an economic, social and political asset for achieving sustainable development. Analysing the Brazilian case, the paper suggests that inclusive growth strategies do not effectively counteract structural conditions of inequality and rather than attacking exclusionary growth patterns merely address immediate exigencies. Hence, returning to redistribution is fundamental for including the rural poor in modern economies, not just in terms of economic efficiency but for constructing equitable and approachable markets that enable the expansion of individual freedom.

Human rigths violations to army members: the rigth to due process = Violaciones a los derechos humanos a los miembros del ejército: el derecho al debido proceso

Por: Maritza del Rosario Padilla Bueno | Fecha: 2014

The purpose of this dissertation is to empirically, analytically, and descriptively, investigate whether or not, and to what extent the fundamental human right to due process of Colombian Army members has been violated by national and international tribunals. The investigation is based on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and analyses cases of Colombian Army members being tried for human rights and IHL abuses by Colombian and international courts. Thus, it argues that due to the “Fuero Militar” (Military Judiciary Jurisdiction) being weakened, the fundamental human right to due process has been violated for military personnel. Accordingly, the paper presents a hypothesis that suggests that political and legal changes of the Military Justice System in Colombia have resulted in due process violations to Colombian Army members. The paper provides analysis of: Firstly (a) the United Kingdom, The United States and the Colombian Armed Forces and Police, in terms of, chain of command, structure, Military Justice, rights and duties; (b) a detailed Colombian Army structure; (c) a comparison between the three countries, illustrating the reasons that made the Colombian context unique; (d) the due process from international legislation to Colombian legislation; (e) the Transitional Justice concept and its interference in the Colombian armed conflict. Secondly, the information collected in the 31 interviews with Colombian Army members being tried for human rights and IHL abuses; together with assessment of three high-profile cases in which Colombian Army members are being tried for human rights and IHL abuses: “Soacha”, “Mapiripan” and “Palacio de Justicia”.  The analysis of the research findings concludes that the weakening of the “Fuero Militar” have increased the number of allegations of human rights violations in the particular case due process to servicemen. Finally, policy changes are suggested and the dissertation recommends that further research be conducted.

Las mentes libres en el derecho penal. Neurociencias y libertad desde una perspectiva funcional de la mente = Free minds in criminal law. Neurosciences and freedom from a functional view of the mind
