Colombia has an advantageous geographical position over the equator, topographical conditions and water resources availability and makes hydropower the main energy source not only to meet the national demand but also to export it to the surrounding countries, especially to Central America, positioning the country as a key provider in generation terms. Hydropower represents 10% of the national GDP and is expected to grow as a consequence of the most recent investments in new infrastructure. Moreover, its contribution is likely to increase from 70% to 80% of the national total generation with new reservoirs operation start, mostly located within the Magdalena river basin. However, those new reservoirs were based on old surveys carried out during the 70s, using the resources available at that time and hence, under a top-down planning approach. Thus, neither Climate variability, climate change nor sediment retention have been assessed involving their inherent uncertainties for planning purposes. This research seeks to apply a novel risk-based approach (CRIDA) to give strategy directions and thus enhance hydropower generation in the Magdalena. The study case is building on an existing method by (1) providing a multi-sector element to the stress test and (2) considering variables not previously included in CRIDA case studies such as a focus on ENSO effect on rainfall and sediment retention. It looks for a better understanding of those natural drivers by defining drought in two different ways by bootstrapping the current rainfall records, comparing the results among different hydropower plant setups and consequently determining the system vulnerability. The results provide greater depth to CRIDA’s Level of Concern Analysis. Climate Change is considered the main threat as its risk is very high; hence it is required to formulate robust and flexible actions. For climate variability the strategy direction must be only robust as its uncertainty is lower than for climate change and the risk between medium and high. Finally, for sediment retention due to the low deviation necessary for further planning stages, the standard planning guidance is enough and CRIDA is not the approach it may kept be using.

This dissertation aims to discuss and analyse the images constructed of the Arabs in Latin America in the first half of the twentieth century. Based on mass media productions of the time, aspects of movie and novel narratives will be examined with the intention of forming an idea of what stereotypes Arabs had to deal with in their daily lives and how they overcame them. In order to understand the question of “How has the status of Arabs been represented in the Americas”, there will be a revision of what the main historical highlights of the Arab diaspora in Latin America are, and how historiography has approached Middle Eastern presence in the continent. I will examine the interplay between locals and Arab immigrants through the eyes of local stereotypes, and state discourses concerning immigration. Finally, I will argue that despite negative stereotypes, Arabs have managed to achieve very important professional goals in Latin America, and their contributions to society have been greater than what has been acknowledged so far in the continent. Esta tesis recibió una distinción meritoria.

An Extended RRT Approach for Car-Like Systems

An extended method of the optimal rapidly exploration random tree (RRT*) for car-like robots is presented in this research paper. As it is known RRT* approach allows finding an asymptotic optimal solution to path planning problem. However, a lot of unnecessary waypoints are necessary as well as sharp corners between two consecutive segments. Also in this work, a removing redundant waypoints method is implemented by checking the visibility along a neighborhood from an initial configuration which will yield a pruned path. To avoid complex turning of the robot in each waypoint, a smoothness path method is implemented by using quintic Bèzier spline as parametric curve taking into account the constraints imposed by the robot leading to increasing the convergence rate to reach an optimum or near an optimum solution and decrease the execution time. Finally, a simulation is presented to verify the effectiveness of the new path.

Amidst the peace deals with the FARC-EP in 2016 and the accession process to the OECD beginning in 2013, the future of Colombia’s success is at a crossroads. This paper explores and describes the dynamics of the violent actors in the conflict during the 1996-2016 period, the role of the extractive economy and their effects on the Colombian human capital. Con la firma del acuerdo de terminación del conflicto con las FARC-EP en 2016 y el proceso de acceso a la OECD iniciado en 2013, el futuro de Colombia está en juego. Esta disertación pretende explorar y describir las dinámicas de los distintos actores violentos en el conflicto armado para el periodo 1996-2016, el papel de la economía extractiva y sus efectos en el capital humano colombiano. Entre les accords de paix avec les FARC-EP en 2016, et le processus d'accession à l'OCDE commencé en 2013, le futur de la réussite colombienne est à un tournant. Cet article explore et décrit les dynamiques des acteurs de la violence du conflit ayant eu lieu dans la période 1996-2016, ainsi que le rôle de l'économie extractive et leurs effets sur le capital humain colombienne.

The North American housing affordability crisis is escalating each year. In Canada, approximately the 83 percent of all homeowners and 40 percent of all renters exceed their affordability threshold on an annual basis. This implies high prices that prevent low-income families from becoming homeowners. Prefabricated, self-help kit homes are a potential solution to reduce housing cost, and to allow customers to participate in the decision-making process with respect to the design of their homes. The former is possible by eliminating paid labor and replacing it with sweat equity, while the latter is possible through the application of mass customization strategies that allow a high level of customer involvement during the pre-occupancy stage. The main goal of this research is to identify the different strategies that manufacturers apply during the production of kit homes. In addition to the theoretical framework, this report consists of analyses of kit homes from eight manufacturers, including evaluations of their advantages and disadvantages with respect to both affordability and mass customization. These analyses led to the definition of guidelines for manufacturing kit homes in Quebec. These guidelines were based on the ideals of improving customer involvement and ensuring the feasibility of self-help construction, while also offering choices and flexibility within kit home packages and affordable options for buyers. The main conclusion of this study is that self-help kit homes are approximately 45 percent less expensive than the conventional housing. However, this savings primarily depends on the ability of the buyers to be self-builders, and on the provision of cost-saving alternatives by manufacturers. Moreover, in terms of mass customization, both panelized and pre-cut prefabrication methods allow a tailored or pure customization. However, it is essential to facilitate the decision-making of customers during the post-occupancy stage as well, and to define more specific parameters and variations.

This research presents the way in which photography can affect the estimated capacity of length measurements in a group of tenth grade students of the Tesoro de la Cumbre School, using it as a learing tool. The investigation is structured in five chapters. In general, chapters one and two include the research problem and the theoretical framework, while chapter three describes the methodology used; in chapter four the data is analyzed and results are extracted, to end with chapter five where conclusions of the research, contributions and recommendations are presented. The development of this research demonstrated that photography as a learning tool of estimation constitutes a training field for the management of concepts and skills related to the magnitude and its measurement (perception and comparison), at the same time as it constitutes a field of work that allows to detect basic conceptual and procedural deficiencies (conversion of measures, recognition of the international system, estimation in calculation) coinciding in the ideas of those researchers who see estimation as a useful tool for the teaching of other concepts (Bright, 1976; Segovia et al., 1989; Whitin, 2004).

This research identifies aspects of the leadership of the teaching director that contribute to effective school management. arises from the analysis of the leadership of teaching managers of three schools, comparing the results of management. The main theoretical bases are the conceptualizations of Bolivar (2012), Maureira (2015) on school leadership, UNESCO (2014), among others: Bass and Avolio (1993), on the theme of leadership styles such as transformational and Transactional, MEN documents Guides 34 and 31. Synthesis of the importance of leadership in the results of school processes is made, a description of the school leadership background in Latin America. The concept of educational institution and school management and the role of managers are specified. Information gathering instruments were applied to the participants; as a semi-structured interview, survey and documentary review within the institutions. The research is evaluative, with a qualitative approach. applying the respondent model of Robert Stake. The categories of analysis are Management Directive, School Leadership and Leadership in Management. Triangulation was carried out to answer the research question regarding the relationship of the leadership of the managers in terms of effective school management.

El estudio muestra la pertinencia de la Evaluación de Carácter Diagnóstico Formativa ECDF para los docentes del decreto 1278 de 2002, evaluación que permite la reflexión y transformación de la práctica pedagógica y el mejoramiento continuo encaminado hacia una educación de calidad. Para el desarrollo de la investigación es necesario contar con la política que respalda la evaluación: desde la implementación de evaluación para los docentes en la ley 115 de 1994 hasta el decreto 1278 de 2002 donde se establece el Estatuto de Profesionalización Docente que regula las relaciones del Estado con los educadores a su servicio. El decreto 1278 establece que los docentes para ascender al escalafón docente realizarán una evaluación por competencias, sin embargo, en el 2015 las entidades Ministerio de Educación y Fecode hacen unos acuerdos en donde la evaluación por competencias cambia a la evaluación de carácter diagnóstico formativa como requisito de ascenso debido a que en los años en el que se implementó la evaluación por competencias los ascensos fueron muy bajos. Para hablar de pertinencia, los docentes tendrán la oportunidad de confirmar si esta evaluación es necesaria para la transformación de la práctica y de mejora continua en el desarrollo profesional.

This Project presents five chapters: The first, describes the beginning with approach to the problem, objectives, background based on the teaching of English, learning assessment, and the model focuses on the task. In addition, the purposes and description of the difficulties of the writing in English of the fourth level students are justified. The second expresses the references framework, categories of analysis and the implementation related with the model. Therefore, the third designates the methodological design, the focus on the strategy, type of research, categories of analysis, instruments in the evaluation of learning through tasks, validations, methodological principies and ethical considerations. The fourth one articulates, examines and interprets the results and findings in the use of the model in an initial state, objectives, methodology of the intervention and concludes with an analysis of results. Finally, the fifth chapter presents conclusions and recommendations where the researcher deduces a process and a method to carry out a task model with the recommendations and principies that are generated from the questions what do you do? And how do you do?, the answer for these questions must have the projects specifícally designed to strengthen the skills of writing in a foreign language in the primary section.

The present study eva!uates the investigative practice of the teachers of the CECAR Caribbean University Law program during the period 2013 to 2018. For this, it was necessary to: identify the number of professors in the plant and chair who have carríed out research in the last five years years, the type of research carried out and its publications in indexed and non-indexed journals, as well as it was possible to determine the participation of teachers in congresses and other academic events and their participation modality. In the same way, the characterization of the research group existing in the CECAR Law program and the nurseries assigned to the program was carried out. The barriers and unmet needs that, according to the teachers, impede the investigative practice of the teachers of the CECAR Law program, íncluding the development of competencies for this work, were identified as variables.
