Un año después del nacimiento de José Asunción Silva, en 1866, el impresor Foción Mantilla, célebre por imprimir textos legales y compilaciones literarias a mediados del siglo XIX, sacó a las librerías el Museo de cuadros y costumbres. Este volumen de dos tomos agrupa noventa y siete textos costumbristas escritos por varios de los hombres (no figura ninguna mujer) fundamentales de la literatura y el periodismo colombiano de entonces, y publicados entre 1846 y 1866. Entre ellos están Rafael Pombo, Ricardo Carrasquilla, José Manuel Groot, Ricardo Carrasquilla, José Manuel Marroquín, Eugenio Díaz y José María Vergara y Vergara, quien también fue el compilador y prologuista de los textos, entre otros. Entre esos nombres sobresale también el de Ricardo Silva, padre de José Asunción Silva, y uno de los escritores costumbristas más leídos de la Bogotá de esos años. Ricardo Silva distribuyó su tiempo entre sus comercios, las tertulias literarias y la escritura de artículos costumbristas. Publicó sus textos principalmente en El Mosaico, el periódico que tomó el nombre de la tertulia que lideraron Eugenio Díaz y José María Vergara y Vergara en 1858, y de la que el mismo Ricardo fue miembro y promotor. Son justo estos textos recopilados en periódicos y revistas los que nutren su participación el Museo de cuadros y costumbres y los que, diecisiete años después, reunió en su libro Artículos de costumbres, editado en 1883 y dedicado a su hijo José Asunción Silva. Esa idea de recopilación, de recortar en periódicos para luego editar un libro, es la que le dio forma a este libro, pensado por José María Vergara y Vergara como una suerte de cuadro familiar de la Colombia de entonces, con sus historias, usos lingüísticos, fragmentos, sucesos cruciales y lugares significativos. Pero fue también un intento por mostrar a Europa, y fundamentalmente a España, una noción del país que heredó y reprodujo la cultura hispánica. Vergara y Vergara insiste en el prólogo, y en sus otros libros, en ubicar a Colombia como una prolongación americana de la cultura española: forjada alrededor del castellano, la religión católica y el pensamiento conservador. En el prólogo del libro se lee: “Como, según lo hemos dejado ya vislumbrar, abrigamos la esperanza de que nuestro libro sea leído por españoles europeos, queremos dirigir a éstos dos palabras en descargo de nuestra conciencia” (p. III). Los textos que aquí se reúnen, entre esos la primera publicación de Manuela (1858), de Eugenio Díaz, dan cuenta de esa iniciativa, pero sobre todo encarnan una empresa literaria sin la que hoy no podríamos rastrear buena parte de la historia literaria de Colombia y de la que el padre de José Asunción Silva fue pieza clave.

Compilación de cartas, circulares, notas y comentarios que circularon entre los miembros del clero colombiano y los representantes políticos del gobierno de Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera, en las que se discute sobre la ley de libertad de cultos, tuición de bienes eclesiásticos, cobros de bienes, penas de extrañamiento, entre otros elementos relacionados con la relación entre la Iglesia católica y el Estado colombiano en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. El documento conserva la ortografía de la época.

A lo largo del documento, que conserva la ortografía de la época, se hace alusión a los socios, la organización, las sesiones, los fondos de cuentas y los diferentes eventos que se organizan en nombre de la institución. La última parte del documento contiene oraciones e indulgencias concedidas a los socios de la sociedad.

Documento en el que se realiza una biografía de la vida privada y pastoral del obispo de Antioquia Domingo Antonio Riaño. El impreso, que conserva la ortografía de la época, aparece acompañado de una oración fúnebre en honor al religioso, así como un escrito literario de Arcesio Escovar en el que se exalta la vida y obra de Riaño.
