Madison Square Tragedy: The Murder of Stanford White

Por: Rick. Geary | Fecha: 2021

Nominee: Reuben Award for Best Graphic Novel, YALSA, Great Graphic Novels for Teens. Bringing to life turn-of-the-century New York and the scintillating career of one of its most famous architects, as well as the vices that cost him his life, this true-crime graphic novel tells the story of one of the most scandalous murders of the times. Stanford White was one of New York's most famous architects, having designed many mansions and the first Madison Square Garden; his influence on New York's look at the turn of the century was pervasive. As he became popular and in demand, he also became quite self-indulgent: he had a taste for budding young showgirls on Broadway, even setting up a private apartment to entertain them in, including a room with a red velvet swing. When he met Evelyn Nesbit--an exquisite young nymph, cover girl, showgirl, inspiration for Charles Dana Gibson's drawing The Eternal Question and later for the movie The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing--he knew he was on to something special. However, Evelyn eventually married a young Pittsburgh decadent heir with a dark side who developed a deep hatred for White and what he may or may not have done to her.

Glenn Gould: A Life Off Tempo

Por: Sandrine. Revel | Fecha: 2021

Nominee: 2017 Eisner Awards, Best Reality Based Work Glenn Gould was a Canadian pianist, a child genius who became a worldwide superstar of classical music remembered for, among others, his almost revolutionary interpretations of Bach. This graphic novel biography seeks to understand the eccentric personality behind the persona. Who is the mysterious Glenn Gould? Why did he abruptly end his career as a performing musician? Why did he become one of the very first of his peers to disappear from the public eye like J.D. Salinger? Sandrine Revel delves into the life of Gould with hand painted illustrations and the viewpoint of an adoring fan. 2017 marks a number of important anniversaries for Gould: the 85th of his birth and 35th of his death but also the 60th of his legendary tour of Russia, a first for a Western artist, and of his debuts with the worlds' leading orchestras.

Albert Einstein: The Poetry of Real

Por: Manuel Garcia. Iglesias | Fecha: 2021

A father offered his son, a five-year-old Albert Einstein, a compass that triggered an irrepressible need to understand the laws of the universe and an iconic scientific career. At first a simple employee of the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, the young Einstein published a series of scientific articles that questioned everything previously understood in the world of physics. His theory, summed up by the formula E = mc2, opened to humanity the doors of the power of the atom. A legendary genius, but also a great humanist, Einstein lived through the first half of the 20th century, with all its horrors and contradictions, in the service of science, but distraught by what man's madness is capable of doing with it.

Winner: 2017 YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens, Non-fiction Nominee: 71st Annual NCS Reuben Awards, Graphic Novels On January 15, 1947, a woman was walking with her daughter in a Los Angeles neighborhood. She passed what looked to be a discarded manikin. It turned out to be the body of Elizabeth Short: posed, drained of blood, meticulously scrubbed, and cut in two. From this point, Geary reconstitutes and reveals for us the life of this 22-year-old woman who had become known as " Dahlia" because of her striking appearance. How could her life have ended in such a ghastly fashion? Was it a jealous boyfriend, a rejected suitor, or one of LA's notorious mafia connections whom she had apparently been dabbling with? The case gets more complex when, days later, a local newspaper receives a cut-out letter from an anonymous " Dahlia Avenger" admitting to the crime.

Lovers' Lane: The Hall Mills Mystery

Por: Rick. Geary | Fecha: 2021

The perfect ingredients for a juicy scandal and fascinating investigation are presented in this masterful graphic novel retelling of an unsolved murder from the 1920s. On the evening of September 14, 1922, Reverend Edward Hall and Mrs. Eleanor Mills take a stroll in the Brunswick town park. Shots are heard and two days later their bodies are found lying neatly next to each other, love letters strewn around them, and a scarf obscures the fact that Mrs. Mills' throat has been slit. The two had been involved in an affair and the press hungrily devours the story. No evidence is sufficient to lead to an indictment, so the mystery intensifies with conjecture: Was this a dual suicide? Was this perpetrated by a jealous rival? Four years later the case reopens due to new evidence indicting the reverend's wife, but she is an upstanding member of the community who vehemently denies that her husband ever had an affair. This is a tragic story told with beguiling relish and expert illustration in a distinctive style fitting of the era.
