The Ocean is of great importance as a source of life, as a producer of oxygen, support eco-systemic, regulatory climate, and food pantry and water reserve. In Colombia, about 50% of the country is Ocean, which is a wealth including oxygen production, fishing, maritime communication lines, renewable and nonrenewable energy, among others.
This deserves a very large development with the capacities, needs and challenges facing the country in the XXI Century. To coordinate the enormous effort involved it proposing a NATIONAL POLICY OF OCEAN AND COASTAL AREAS capable of promoting Ocean development of Colombia through its seas, was restructured Colombian Ocean Commission in 2000, and assigned this important task.
