Aim for the Skies: Jerrie Mock and Joan Merriam Smith's Race to Complete Amelia Earhart's Quest

Por: Doris. Ettlinger | Fecha: 2024

When she was seven years old, Geraldine (Jerrie) Mock took her first airplane ride. She decided then and there to be a pilot. Growing up, she was inspired by radio broadcasts detailing the travels of aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Joan Merriam was 15 when she took her first plane ride in 1952. She got her pilot's license before she could even drive a car. And like Jerrie, Joan too was inspired by Earhart and wanted to circle the globe, following Earhart's exact route. Years later, when both women begin to plan their dream flights, they are completely unaware of each other, and coincidentally pick the same time to depart. But when the media gets word of their plans, the stage is set for the race of a lifetime. This picture book retells the extraordinary story of the 1964 air race between Americans Geraldine Mock and Joan Merriam Smith, the first two women to fly around the world.

Illustrating Spain in the US

Por: Ana. Merino | Fecha: 2023

Since the very founding of the United States, the country's history has been intertwined with that of Spain's, in many essential yet often overlooked ways. Illustrating Spain in the US brings together some of Spain's most acclaimed cartoonists and scholars to celebrate and interrogate the contributions of Spanish immigrants to America's political, cultural, and scientific history. Diplomat Eduardo Garrigues and cartoonist Rayco Pulido resurrect the historical figure of Bernardo de Galvez, who played a crucial role in the Revolutionary War. Professor James Fernandez, Filmmaker Luis Argeo and artists Ana Penyas and Seisdedos bring to life the rollicking immigrant enclave of Tampa, once known as the "Cigar Capital of the World." Professor Estrella de Diego and cartoonist Carla Berrocal shed light on the Spanish actors, screenwriters and musicians who broke into Hollywood and made their mark on American cinema. Professor Maria Dolores Jimenez-Blanco and cartoonist Max lead readers through the labyrinthine history of Spanish art collecting in the US, and the influence of Spanish art on popular American art movements. And much more! Combining the graphic expressiveness of comic art with the illuminating perspective of scholarly essays, this project aims to spark a creative dialogue about Spain's legacy in the US.

Sobrevivimos al Holocausto: La historia de Bluma y Felix Goldberg

Por: John. Shableski | Fecha: 2024

The Way to Wealth: Benjamin Franklin on Matters of Money and Lessons on Livelihood

Por: Benjamin. Franklin | Fecha: 2024

What is the way to wealth? And... how do you get there? Benjamin Franklin has a few ideas. He did write the book after all. There are quite literally thousands of tomes that purport to point the way, but it was Ben Franklin who collected the golden rules he peppered throughout his wildly popular Poor Richard's Almanac and produced a perennial best-seller in 1758, The Way to Wealth, or Poor Richard Improved. Today in 2024, The Way to Wealth: Benjamin Franklin on Matters of Money and Lessons on Livelihood is a new spin on the classic and reimagines the narrative in the modern day with avatars for virtues and vices that help or hinder us in seeking one's own fortune... in whatever we find of value. Additionally, the book includes Franklin's original text with new illustrations. Adapted and illustrated by Tim E. Ogline, MBA, this graphic novel is a companion to his highly regarded Ben Franklin for Beginners. Ogline's first book about Ben Franklin has been called "beguiling" by Pulitzer Prize winner Joseph J. Ellis and a "must read" by former Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell. The book has also been called "nothing short of totally brilliant" by Geekadelphia. Additionally, Tim Ogline is the co-author and artist of We Survived the Holocaust: The Bluma and Felix Goldberg Story, called "vital reading" by Publishers Weekly and "moving and important" by Kirkus.
