Snowbird

Por: Eren K.. Wilson | Fecha: 2023

Trying to save the world while struggling to save yourself is a recipe for (climate) disaster. In this graphic memoir, Erin navigates the punk/activist art scenes while dealing with personal and environmental devastation; racial inequality and internalized racism; and the sometimes difficult business of staying alive in the face of mental health conditions. It asks and answers the question: what would we do if we could counsel our younger self?

The Essence of Being a Muse, Vol 1

Por: Aya. Fumino | Fecha: 2023

Twenty-three-year-old art school reject Miyuu Seno has a blue print for the future, but it's not her own. Instead, she's stuck on the "secure" path her mom has laid out for her--from her office job, to her clothes, to the guys she meets--and it's making Miyuu more miserable by the day. When things come to a head between them, Miyuu leaves home with a blank canvas in tow, holding on to the hope that painting can somehow undo the phony she's become...

Flora and the Shooting Stars

Por: Daphné. Collignon | Fecha: 2023

40-year-old Flora has just gone through a bitter divorce after 20 years of marriage. Thankfully, she can count on the support of her friends: Roxane, the cool hippie who loves to garden, Lea, the tireless career woman, and her old neighbor, Venerable. Like her friends, Flora would love to find her soul mate, but it's just not that simple. She has several promising dates, but once the first flush of passion is over, her lovers seem to disappear into the night. Why does this keep happening? Is she not attractive enough? Is she so difficult to be around? Or is she being sabotaged by someone close to her? A story for the divorced (and perpetually single) 40-somethings who just want to take a moment to catch their breath, and maybe even enjoy their singledom, told through the eyes of Flora and her hilarious entourage.

Anaïs Nin: A Sea of Lies

Por: Léonie. Bischoff | Fecha: 2023

Anais Nin, the author of works such as Delta of Venus and House of Incest, is the patron saint of taboo-breaking pop culture sexual iconoclasts. Not only is she an inspiration for contemporary figures such as Madonna, but her oeuvre, which encompasses erotica, autobiography, essays, short fiction, novels, and much more, has been adapted into film (Henry and June), television (Little Birds), and other media. The cartoonist Leonie Bischoff traces the life of the prolific writer in this lushly colored graphic novel. It begins with Nin struggling to reconcile the man she married (who had artistic aspirations) with the banker she finds herself living with in the Parisian suburbs. Soon, her obsession with June Miller leads to inspiration. Nin's life and art, the truth and fiction, are further intertwined as she recounts her many sexual liaisons including those with Henry Miller (whom she and her husband subsidize so he can write the controversial Tropic of Cancer), her psychoanalysts, and even her father. Although Bischoff's drawing is largely representational, she occasionally depicts Nin's sexual experiences in scenes as surreal as Nin's own written portrayal of them.

Maiden 2 Confirmation

Por: | Fecha: 2023

In part two of this autobiographical tale, Florence has left her childhood behind and is crashing headlong into the awkwardness and pain of adolescence. Her body is changing, but she is still just as cruelly clueless about it as she ever has been. And now, The Thing--the one you're not supposed to talk about--is starting to pulse... Florence Dupre la Tour continues her masterpiece of inks and watercolors in this gut-wrenching, hilarious, and ultimately powerful look at what happens when a child is deprived of a proper education: the more they grow up, the smaller the adults around them get.

In Florence's childhood, there is a Thing you're not supposed to talk about. It seems like everyone knows about it... except for her. And she can't ask any questions--it's forbidden to speak the word. What happens to children who grow up in prudish isolation, once they hit puberty? Can they ever overcome the shame instilled by a sexless education? In this autobiographical story, Florence Dupre la Tour unveils her childhood in heart-wrenching inks and watercolors: a story of the heavy weight of tradition that forces women to be submissive, and how to resist and escape that fate.

In book two of this historical saga, the elderly Louise recounts her grandmother Josephine's struggles to run the family plantation in the years leading up to the American Civil War. Josephine tries to raise her son Jean to be nothing like his grandfather and uncle, whose tyranny over their slaves and the women of the family forced Josephine and her mother to resort to the services of a voodoo priestess from New Orleans. But when Jean falls for a slave named Celeste, Josephine's tolerance and values are put to the test.
