Letras y Encajes publica su primer número en 1926; esta revista fue fundada por mujeres de la clase dirigente de Medellín, muchas de ellas socias de la institución cultural Centro Femenino de Estudios (Sofía Ospina de Navarro, Teresa Santamaría de González, Ángela Villa de Toro y Alicia Merizalde de Echavarría), a lo largo del tiempo se consolidó como la revista femenina más importante del país, dirigida a mujeres de la clase alta y media, abordaba temas que giraban alrededor del hogar, la religión, la literatura y la moda de la época. La revista circuló mensualmente hasta 1959. Sus principales redactoras eran mujeres, pero contaba con la colaboración ocasional de algunos hombres y con traducciones de autoras y autores extranjeras.

“Anacaona, india de raza cautiva" canta Joe Cuba y Cheo Feliciano en su sonada salsa rindiéndole honores a la poetisa indígena que luchó contra los invasores españoles. La "flor de oro" que significa Anacaona, se convirtió en una leyenda, que la memoria oral y escrita la ha reinterpretado de generación en generación. América Latina, continente de mitos y leyendas que conforman su imaginario colectivo, hoy discute con las nuevas generaciones la invasión de hace 500 años, oportunidad histórica que se nos presenta para que los investigadores se reencuentren con su pasado y recuperen la historia de la mujer, la de las mujeres subalternas, las indígenas, las negras, teniendo que ver con la etnia, región, grupo social y familiar. Y como hemos sido despojadas de la palabra, hoy recuperamos en el tiempo su significación. Para interpretar aquel pasado y entender el presente necesitamos de la historia, la sociología, la psicología, la economía, la antropología entre otras.
