Jacob's Apartment

Por: Joshua Kemble | Fecha: 2025

At first glance, college roommates Jacob and Sarah seem like polar opposites. Jacob is a Christian; Sarah is an atheist. Sarah is a drinker, and Jacob, a teetotaler. But they have been friends for years, finding commonality in their shared dream to create art. Jacob's world is turned upside down when his father dies, causing him to question his faith. Meanwhile, Sarah wrestles with her own demons, searching for solace in one-night stands after her boyfriend (and professor) leaves her for a job in New York. A coming-of-age graphic novel in the vein of Ghost World and Fun Home, Jacob's Apartment weaves together the threads of spiritual faith, identity, purpose, love, and loss to create an engrossing world in which waking and sleeping dreams collide.

Gender Studies: The Confessions of an Accidental Outlaw

Por: Ajuan Mance | Fecha: 2024

When you're the only Black kid in the honors program or (any program) at your mostly white high school, or one of a handful of Black graduate students in your PhD program, or one of two African American women on the faculty at your Pac-10 employer, it's not your gender non-conformity that sets you apart from your peers. In those environments, your Blackness is the first thing people notice about you. Still, there are other ways of being different--and feeling different--that can't be attributed to race, especially if you're one of the people whose awareness of the unwritten rules of what it means to be a boy or a girl (or a man or a woman) is tempered by the fact that most of those rules don't feel quite right. In Gender Studies: True Confessions of an Accidental Outlaw, Ajuan Mance gives comic treatment to the challenges, complexities, and occasional absurdity of life at the crossroads of race, gender, and geekiness. This graphic memoir answers important questions like: How many preschoolers have to mistake you for your dad before you actually start to forget your own name; if a Black girl is awful at double-dutch jump rope is it a reflection on her gender identity, racial identity, or both; and is viola player a gender or just a sexual orientation? Ajuan Mance's comic Gender Confessions take up each of these questions and more, as it invites to share in those moments that mark the path of a gender explorer.

Issue twelve begins with Wincy "hatching" a plan using the cycle of life to raise and train his own fly-destroying warriors to swat Incy, and Inventor Boy wants to help aspiring novelists come up with themes and conventions with his latest invention the "Story-Writer 6000". Tracey Time ends up red faced after glitching back in time to learn Roman Numerals from...well, the Romans! Basil tries to teach Ernie basic greetings in French, but will he ever learn? In "Picture-it" we look at bullying and get a picture of what it is in all its various forms, possible reasons and some positive solutions to use in response to unkind attention. Detective Duke sleuths out an unusual way to force Mrs Moggins out of the tree she is stuck in and Carl the Constipated Tadpole outlines Prime, Square, and Cubed numbers to help "pass" the time. In Dan's Body Battles the antibody soldiers in Flesh Base 2 learn the importance of proof-reading messages in order to get them right - even if it's urgent. After another rough day at the end of some shocking conditions, Nurse Skuttlefish gets her pronouns and prepositions confused and it does not end well. In "Tales of Words" a sad tree spirit begs an enchantress to bless her with skeleton and muscles so that she can enjoy the fruits of the tree she is guardian to, and then the evil Lord Hackworth helps Count Clockface become mayor so he can rid Robo City of rules and laws, (let's hope Timbot can hurry and save the day!). With old Clockwork Clive and Pickle-Nibbling Pete arguing that their own treasure is 8 times more valuable than the other, they didn't even notice the Cactus Jacks pinchin' all their loot! Issue twelve also contains posters about French Greetings and Romans Numerals.

Cheeky Outlawra deliberately gets her homophones in a muddle and Ricky Rhino shows how birds of a feather really do flock together when it comes to vanity and a flexible use of proper and common nouns.... Sprocket's artist creates him some friends to play with but then some negative numbers turn up and things are not so positive. Issue ten begins with Wilma and Wurton having rounded number fun with bubbles then Timbot and Crowball find themselves battling with Count Clockface's new power suit that powers up by 12 with every transformation. Beechboy Barkley discovers the harsh reality of the food chain and Gamer Girl recreates her computer game "City of Settlements" in the playground with her classmates - but where is the reset button in real life? Thankfully Outlawra is a cartoon because her hazard awareness needs some serious training and Carl the Constipated Tadpole adds some interesting superlatives (no, not "super-laxatives") to previously dull nouns as he investigates adjectives. Max tries to save his friend Charlie and his delicious cakes from expulsion by reading between the lines and presenting a case using P.E.E (Point, Evidence and Explanation). Sprocket learns how to tell a story through settings, characters, and plot and then we follow the journey of food from chew to...um...loo in "Picture-It". Inventor Boy's Spa Machine with a built-in French translator lets him know exactly how his French neighbour is feeling as she prepares to frighten the neighbourhood on Halloween. We ascertain and celebrate everyone's differences with Doctopus, and Nurse Skuttlefish then Ricky Rhino baffles some bandits with his wisdom on the place value of numbers. Por: Dekko Team | Fecha: 2020

In Issue nine Tracey Time's attempt to buy tickets to see her favourite band "The Rockturnals" on the 9th of September sends her glitchy time travelling phone into a 9 times table meltdown. Nurse Skuttlefish is never short of verbs while chasing around after The Doctopus with his multitasking tentacles and Jessica gets some help from Miriam the friendly nightmare with a tricky percentage calculation in an Octopus' garden. Basil is shocked by Ernie (literally) to learn that he has made some common spelling mistakes on certain words and Agent Ang is masterfully decoding noun phrases to try and get one over on his annoying big sister. Clockwork Clive's attempts to use magnets and gravity to his advantage backfire (again, quite literally) when he encounters his old foe Pickle-Nibbling Pete the prospector, and the Dekko Kids work together to try to raise some funds to fix the grimy old bench in the local park for Ms Fraser - with unexpected results...Now Piwi the Posh Kiwi and Ricky Rhino may seem unlikely acquaintances but their mutual love of money (and how it works) brings them to the negotiation table. Another potion has gone awry for Wilma and Wurton and this time they have unleashed some state of matter monsters onto the world. In "Tales of Words" we follow a young owl's quest to have his night-time play time extended; but if the sun never moves then how does it go down and come up every day? Timbot and Crowball discover some fossils, crystals, granite, and chalk but they must fight off Megabite and Toadatron to keep hold of their treasure trove, while Dan's internal body battles mimic the night Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of parliament in England during 1605. Issue nine also includes a poster showing a sneaky secret trick for your 9 Times Tables and others on Noun Phrases and States of Matter.
