El Tercer Encuentro Nacional de Mujeres Indígenas se realizó para fomentar y reivindicar el trabajo con mujeres en el movimiento indígena dentro de sus organizaciones zonales, regionales y Nacional. Ya que el trabajo con mujeres ha sido ignorado y la problemática que las afecta no ha sido realmente tratada, es importante recurrir a nuevas alternativas de organización donde la mujer indígena esté presente, pues abrirle espacios de trabajo organizativo a las mujeres fortalecerá las organizaciones indígenas. Es importante reconocer las contribuciones culturales y sociales que brindan las mujeres a sus comunidades, y que deben extenderse al área política y organizativa. En este evento se planteó con claridad que los problemas que enfrentan las mujeres indígenas están muy relacionados con la problemática general de sus comunidades, como son la salud, el medio ambiente, la educación, capacitación, violencia o falta de tierras. Es por esta razón que las delegadas a este encuentro plantearon que el trabajo con mujeres debe tener sus raíces en el proceso organizativo de cada comunidad o región. Las organizaciones zonales, regionales y Nacional deben comprometerse a asumir una política que incluya la problemática específica de las mujeres indígenas dentro del marco general de reivindicaciones. De otra manera este tipo de trabajo no dará resultado. En el transcurso del encuentro se trabajó en grupos pequeños que discutían temas sobre el trabajo organizativo y la manera de recuperar o simplemente implementar el trabajo con mujeres. El primer trabajo en grupo analizó lo que es la problemática de las mujeres en cada una de las regionales, según la experiencia de cada delegada. Además, cada delegada trajo de su regional un documento de diagnóstico del trabajo con mujeres y de la realidad que las afecta. De la exposición de estos documentos, del trabajo en grupo y de las discusiones en sesiones de plenaria, salieron tanto las problemáticas como las propuestas de trabajo que se delinearán en el presente informe.
