Whistleblowers: Four Who Fought to Expose the Holocaust to America

Por: Rafael. Medoff | Fecha: 2024

A compelling nonfiction graphic novel, Whistleblowers is the true story of four courageous individuals who risked their careers--or their lives--to confront the unfolding Holocaust. Who were the whistleblowers? o Alan Cranston--a young journalist and future U.S. senator who exposed the truth of Hitler's plans. o Henry Morgenthau, Jr.--a member of Franklin D. Roosevelt's cabinet who confronted the President over the plight of Jewish refugees fleeing Hitler o Jan Karski--an eyewitness to Nazi atrocities who met with American and British officials to alert them about the death camps. o Josiah E. DuBois Jr.--an American civil servant who blew the whistle on colleagues inside the Roosevelt administration who were blocking the rescue of refugees. Acclaimed author Dr. Rafael Medoff, director of the David Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, and award-winning comics creator Dean Motter bring to life these tales of moral courage in the face of genocide.

Ticktock Banneker's Clock

Por: David C.. Gardner | Fecha: 2024

Throughout his life, Benjamin Banneker was known and admired for his work in science, mathematics, and astronomy, just to name a few pursuits. But even when he was born in Maryland in 1731, he was already an extraordinary person for that time period. He was born free at a time in America when most African Americans were slaves. Though he only briefly attended school and was largely self-taught, at a young age Benjamin displayed a keen aptitude for mathematics and science. Inspired by a pocket watch he had seen, at the age of 22 he built a strike clock based on his own drawings and using a pocket-knife. This picture book biography focuses on one episode in a remarkable life.

The River that Wolves Moved: A True Tale from Yellowstone

Por: David. Hohn | Fecha: 2024

Long before its establishment as a national park in 1872, Yellowstone was home to the gray wolf, as well as other large predators. But the relationship between human and wolf has always been a tense and complicated one. Predator control programs were developed and, by the mid-1900s, wolves had almost been entirely eliminated from the region and even the lower United States. The removal of even one strand of an ecosystem's complex web can have a ripple effect, though. Using the structure of "The House that Jack Built," science writer Mary Kay Carson shows the interconnectedness of the wildlife that lives in a place and how the presence (or absence) of a single species can impact an ecosystem so that the physical landscape itself is altered. Engaging text and colorful detailed artwork make the natural science understandable and accessible to young readers. With so many of Earth's ecosystems under threat by climate change, pollution, and loss of habitat, this is a critical and timely topic. Back matter includes information on the Yellowstone region during the wolves' absence and after their reintroduction.

Por: Scott. Brundage | Fecha: 2024

2020 New York State Reading Association Charlotte Award Master List In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued a challenge to the nation: land astronauts on the moon by the end of the decade. The Apollo program was designed by NASA to meet that challenge, and on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 lifted off from Kennedy Space Center carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin. Apollo 11's prime mission objective: "Perform a manned lunar landing and return." Four days after take-off, the Lunar Module "Eagle," carrying Armstrong and Aldrin, separated from the Command Module "Columbia," and descended to the moon. Armstrong reported back to Houston's Command Center, "The Eagle has landed." America and the world watched in wonder and awe as a new chapter in space exploration opened. Through verse and informational text, author Rhonda Gowler Greene celebrates Apollo 11's historic moon landing.
