Bloody Mary: A Graphic Biography of Mary Tudor

Por: Kristina. Gehrmann | Fecha: 2025

An elegant, intimate graphic novel retelling of Mary "the Bloody" Tudor's infamous life and evolution from loyal subject to royal tyrant. The story of Mary Tudor -- oldest child and daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, sister to the famous Elizabeth I -- as never told before. A chronological telling of Mary's life as "told" by her spans her magnificent life, starting from her "first memory" at the age of two to becoming the first queen to inherit the throne of an England in disarray. Once rejected at birth, Mary was certain the cause of suffering was her subjects' rejection of the one true faith: Catholicism. Her zealous campaign to re-Catholicize England was unrelenting in its brutality, re-christening her, "Mary, the Bloody." The Tudors famously used fine art to define their reign. Using expressive line work and lush watercolor, German graphic novelist fittingly teases the painterly allure of royalty as she reveals the stark loneliness of the crown. Gehrmann pulls from real quotes from historical documents and letters along with dramatizations of known historic events. These details immerse us in Mary I's epic life from her volatile childhood to her tragic demise, rendering a stunning portrait of a "bastard queen" losing her grip on power.

The Flavors of Iraq

Por: Kendra. Boileau | Fecha: 2025

The Western media largely glossed over the immense human suffering that occurred in Iraq during the embargo of the 1990s and the Iraq War. With this innovative and award-winning graphic novel, French-Iraqi journalist Feurat Alani sets that record straight. The Flavors of Iraq Illustrated by the striking art of Leonard Cohen and with a foreword by Ross Caputi, a former US Marine who served in Iraq from 2003 to 2006, tells a poetic and powerful story of an oppressed population, an illegal war, and a country that no longer exists.

Cartoonists Against Racism

Por: Rafael. Medoff | Fecha: 2025

Horrific scenes of anti-Jewish violence in Europe filled the newsreels in American theaters in the 1930s and 1940s. What could be done to make sure it didn't happen in America? One Jewish organization hit upon a remarkable idea--to enlist some of America's most beloved cartoonists to wage a war on bigotry. Cartoonists Against Racism uncovers the secret campaign to create anti-racist comics and cartoons to flood America's newspapers, classrooms, and union halls. Meet the artists and the work that was their ammunition in the battle for America's soul. The book showcases impactful anti-racism artwork from the era's preeminent cartoonists, including multiple Pulitzer Prize winners Bill Mauldin and Vaughn Shoemaker; New Yorker cartoonists Carl Rose, Mischa Richter, and Frank Hanley; famed antiwar cartoonist Robert Osborn; Dave Berg of Mad magazine; renowned sports cartoonist Willard Mullin; noted labor cartoonist Bernard Seaman; comics artist Mac Raboy (Flash Gordon, Captain Marvel Jr.); and Eric Godal, who escaped from Nazi Germany and became a leading cartoonist in the American press and acclaimed artist Dick Dorgan.

Dreams Take Flight: The Story of Deaf Pilot Nellie Zabel Willhite

Por: Alisha. Monnin | Fecha: 2025

Nellie Zabel Willhite's story dips and soars like an airplane in flight. After losing her hearing at four and following a tumultuous education, she was introduced to the world of flight while working at the Sioux Falls airport. The planes and pilots captured her imagination as she watched them sail alongside the birds. With some encouragement, she enrolled in pilot training--carefully tailoring the courses to accommodate her deafness. In 1928, she took off on her own, becoming the first female pilot in South Dakota--and the first deaf pilot in the nation. This Own Voices, Own Stories Award winning book tells Nellie's story from the perspective of an author with a hearing loss and is supported by Easterseals.

A Rodin

Por: Eddy. Simon | Fecha: 2021

This comics biography of one of the greatest sculptors who ever lived is brought to life by a collaboration with the Rodin Museum and includes a preface by its director. It views the artist's story through the eyes of the three women who shared his life, for good or for bad. One was his lifelong on-and-off companion, the other two his muses--one of whom was Camille Claudel, a well-recognized sculptor herself. Rodin's work was revolutionary in conveying exceptional passion, transcending the stone. Here's how that happened.
