A Song So Black, So Proud!

Por: R.J.. Owens | Fecha: 2024

Written on a napkin and released just months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the song "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)" became an anthem and rallying cry for the civil rights movement, as well as a celebration of Black culture and community. The song was penned in 1968 by singer James Brown in response to the rising racial tensions throughout the United States. Now, in first-person lyrical text, the iconic song speaks for itself, narrating the elements and moments that inspired its creation. The song continues to inspire and resonate today. It's been covered by artists like Usher and anchored Spotify's Black Lives Matter playlist. Readers of all ages will be encouraged to lift their own voices in a celebration of Black pride and identity.

A Spy Called James

Por: Anne. Rockwell | Fecha: 2024

Told for the first time in picture book form is the true story of James Lafayette--an enslaved person who spied for George Washington's army during the American Revolution. After his resounding defeat at the battle of Yorktown, British general Charles Cornwallis made a point of touring the American camp, looking for the reason behind his loss. What he didn't expect to see was James, an escaped enslaved person who had served as a guide to the British army. Or at least that's what Cornwallis was led to believe. In fact, James wasn't actually a runaway--he was a spy for the American army. But while America celebrated its newfound freedom, James returned to slavery in Virginia. His service as a spy hadn't qualified him for the release he'd been hoping for. For James the fight wasn't over; his next adversary was the Virginia General Assembly. He'd already helped his country gain its freedom, now it was time to win his own.

Bloody Mary: A Graphic Biography of Mary Tudor

Por: Kristina. Gehrmann | Fecha: 2025

An elegant, intimate graphic novel retelling of Mary "the Bloody" Tudor's infamous life and evolution from loyal subject to royal tyrant. The story of Mary Tudor -- oldest child and daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, sister to the famous Elizabeth I -- as never told before. A chronological telling of Mary's life as "told" by her spans her magnificent life, starting from her "first memory" at the age of two to becoming the first queen to inherit the throne of an England in disarray. Once rejected at birth, Mary was certain the cause of suffering was her subjects' rejection of the one true faith: Catholicism. Her zealous campaign to re-Catholicize England was unrelenting in its brutality, re-christening her, "Mary, the Bloody." The Tudors famously used fine art to define their reign. Using expressive line work and lush watercolor, German graphic novelist fittingly teases the painterly allure of royalty as she reveals the stark loneliness of the crown. Gehrmann pulls from real quotes from historical documents and letters along with dramatizations of known historic events. These details immerse us in Mary I's epic life from her volatile childhood to her tragic demise, rendering a stunning portrait of a "bastard queen" losing her grip on power.

The Flavors of Iraq

Por: Kendra. Boileau | Fecha: 2025

The Western media largely glossed over the immense human suffering that occurred in Iraq during the embargo of the 1990s and the Iraq War. With this innovative and award-winning graphic novel, French-Iraqi journalist Feurat Alani sets that record straight. The Flavors of Iraq Illustrated by the striking art of Leonard Cohen and with a foreword by Ross Caputi, a former US Marine who served in Iraq from 2003 to 2006, tells a poetic and powerful story of an oppressed population, an illegal war, and a country that no longer exists.
