Dekko Comics #1

Por: Rossie. Stone | Fecha: 2020

Dekko Comics are the wackiest funniest short comic stories you've ever read, with a full cast of crazy comic characters. The stories range from adventurous to ridiculous, but what's particularly special about Dekko is that the stories are actually educational too. They cover school subjects from maths to literacy, and do so by being entertaining first and educational second. These stories are ideal for anyone looking for learning in a fun way, and especially helpful for those who struggle with conventional reading: like dyslexic readers. Reading Dekko will turn your learning into a Saturday activity without you even realizing it. In Issue One Basil and Ernie demonstrate how to recognise and use historical sources, while Piwi the Posh Kiwi's weeklong holiday in France teaches us the days of the week in French. Timbot and Crowball fight off the Timetron robots with their knowledge of time while Wilma the witch with Wurton the wizard use their magic spells to help us practice the rules of spelling. Outlawra's granny gives an (uninvited) first-hand account about the Homefront during World War II - while Outlawra demonstrates her own version of the Blitz! In Dan's body battles he learns about sinuses (yuck! mucus!) while Doctopus and Nurse Skuttlefish work to diagnose a German blowfish. Beechboy Barkley's long legs give us a lesson in measuring and Basil and Ernie teach some fractions, decimals, and percentages while they (try to) share a pizza. Literacy expert Cob the Impossible Blob shows us the parts of speech while the Knight and the Dragon demonstrate figures of speech in "Tales of Words" and Sprocket learns about FORCE - the hard way. Issue one also contains posters about spelling rule exceptions, figures of speech and reading time.

Dekko Comics #9

Por: Rossie. Stone | Fecha: 2020

In Issue nine Tracey Time's attempt to buy tickets to see her favourite band "The Rockturnals" on the 9th of September sends her glitchy time travelling phone into a 9 times table meltdown. Nurse Skuttlefish is never short of verbs while chasing around after The Doctopus with his multitasking tentacles and Jessica gets some help from Miriam the friendly nightmare with a tricky percentage calculation in an Octopus' garden. Basil is shocked by Ernie (literally) to learn that he has made some common spelling mistakes on certain words and Agent Ang is masterfully decoding noun phrases to try and get one over on his annoying big sister. Clockwork Clive's attempts to use magnets and gravity to his advantage backfire (again, quite literally) when he encounters his old foe Pickle-Nibbling Pete the prospector, and the Dekko Kids work together to try to raise some funds to fix the grimy old bench in the local park for Ms Fraser - with unexpected results...Now Piwi the Posh Kiwi and Ricky Rhino may seem unlikely acquaintances but their mutual love of money (and how it works) brings them to the negotiation table. Another potion has gone awry for Wilma and Wurton and this time they have unleashed some state of matter monsters onto the world. In "Tales of Words" we follow a young owl's quest to have his night-time play time extended; but if the sun never moves then how does it go down and come up every day? Timbot and Crowball discover some fossils, crystals, granite, and chalk but they must fight off Megabite and Toadatron to keep hold of their treasure trove, while Dan's internal body battles mimic the night Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of parliament in England during 1605. Issue nine also includes a poster showing a sneaky secret trick for your 9 Times Tables and others on Noun Phrases and States of Matter.

Out of School and Into Nature

Por: Jessica. Lanan | Fecha: 2024

Winner of the 2018 Green Earth Book Award. This picture book biography examines the life and career of naturalist and artist Anna Comstock (1854-1930), who defied social conventions and pursued the study of science. From the time she was a young girl, Anna Comstock was fascinated by the natural world. She loved exploring outdoors, examining wildlife and learning nature's secrets. From watching the teamwork of marching ants to following the constellations in the sky, Anna observed it all. And her interest only increased as she grew older and went to college at Cornell University. There she continued her studies, pushing back against those social conventions that implied science was a man's pursuit. Eventually Anna became known as a nature expert, pioneering a movement to encourage schools to conduct science and nature classes for children outdoors, thereby increasing students' interest in nature. In following her passion, this remarkable woman blazed a trail for female scientists today.
