Lio: There's Corpses Everywhere

Por: Mark Tatulli | Fecha: 2013

Through the age-old style of pantomime strips, Tatulli's Lio offers a decidedly new and edgy twist to the wordless comic format. That's right-Lio is so crafty it doesn't need word balloons, dialogue boxes, or copious captions. Employing a unique drawing style influenced by cartooning greats Gahan Wilson, Charles Addams, and 19th-century satirist A. J. Volck, Tatulli's cartoon creation is completely nonsyllabic but dramatic nonetheless, and was awarded as 2009's Best Newspaper Comic Strip by the National Cartoonists Society. The result of Tatulli's creativity is a mind-bending, comical, and astute journey into the darkly detailed world of spiky-haired Lio, a curious young scientist and comic book fan whose daydreams embark from the dark chasm where wit and sarcasm collide. Defender of the defenseless and the inventor of a legion of zombie bunnies, Lio is joined in his day-to-day exploits by his exasperated and sleep-deprived father, a pet snake named Frank, a squid named Ishmael, and various imaginary robots and creepy, crawly monsters. Within this humorously macabre framework of sarcasm, parody, and high jinx, sidesplitting laughter abounds-all without so much as a word.

Reheated Lio: A Delicious Lio Collection Ready to Devour

Por: Mark Tatulli | Fecha: 2013

Distinguished by Variety as "a fast riser," Mark Tatulli's morbidly mirthful comic strip Lio proves that happiness is indeed a modified Snuggie for you and your favorite eight-armed cephalopod. Reheated Lio, the fourth Lio cartoon collection, includes 40 weeks of color Sunday strips as well as black-and-white daily strips. Drawn in the style of cartooning greats Gahan Wilson, Charles Addams, and 19th-century satirist A. J. Volck, Lio is a pantomime strip that tells its story without any dialogue or cartoon captions. Fans of Lio recognize the spiky-haired ghostly pale youngster as a curious scientist, a comic-book fan, the defender of the defenseless, and the creator of a legion of zombie bunnies, flanked by his creepy coterie of friends, including giant squid Ishmael and the scythe-carrying grim reaper. Inside Reheated Lio, readers learn how Mr. Sneaky's Jokes and Gags can make archery practice more fun, along with the many uses of spiders-including their essential roles in Girl Scout cookie procurement and as a quality pizza condiment. Cozy up to your favorite Snuggied cephalopod with Reheated Lio."

Cul de Sac Collection: Shapes and Colors

Por: Richard Thompson | Fecha: 2013

Richard Thompson's Cul de Sac follows the antics of four-year-old Alice Otterloop as she navigates her way through her suburban town and life's ups and downs at Blisshaven Preschool. Thompson's paintbrush captures humorously poignant and reflectively thoughtful watercolor scenes that offer commentary on life and how we choose to live it. Appearing in more than 100 newspapers, Cul de Sac has garnered Thompson critical praise from both the National Cartoonists Society and the Society of Illustrators.

Get Fuzzy Vol #4 The Get Fuzzy Experience

Por: Darby Conley | Fecha: 2013

Syndicated by United Feature Syndicate, Get Fuzzy appears in 250 newspapers, from the Los Angeles Times to the Detroit Free Press to the Philadelphia Enquirer. Darby Conley's first book, This Dog Is Not a Toy, sold more than 115,000 copies; his second book, Fuzzy Logic, more than 85,000.When he was a child, Darby Conley used to wonder what his beloved pooch was thinking. That curiosity led to his creation of the hilarious strip Get Fuzzy in 1999, which has rapidly become one of the most popular cartoons in newspaper syndication. Showcasing the relationship between Bucky, a temperamental cat with an attitude; the sweet and sensitive dog Satchel; and their mild-mannered human companion, Rob Wilco, Get Fuzzy has cornered the market on anthropomorphic antics. Anyone who finds animals both amazing and amusing will find this new Get Fuzzy collection one of the most bitingly funny books ever printed.

Get Fuzzy Vol #2 Fuzzy Logic

Por: Darby Conley | Fecha: 2013

Cats are famous for being aloof, but "cat-titude" reaches new heights in Get Fuzzy, the bitingly funny comic strip from cartoonist Darby Conley. Wry and witty, Get Fuzzy is a hilarious portrait of single life with pets. Rob Wilco is the human who heads the household, but it's really Bucky the cat who's in charge. Satchel, the gentle pooch with a sensitive soul who tries to remain neutral, frequently ends up on the receiving end of Bucky's mischief. Together, this trio makes it through the trials and tribulations of daily life as an unlikely team. Darby Conley's Fuzzy Logic will hit the funny bone of everyone who enjoys their pets with an attitude.

Pickles: Still Pickled After All These Years

Por: Brian Crane | Fecha: 2013

This is the second fan letter I have written in my whole life. The other one was to Hopalong Cassidy, when I had a great crush on him at about six years old. But I did want to let you know how very much both my husband and I have enjoyed Pickles from the very first strip. Would you please consider putting a collection together in book form?" --Lois F. in Nevada As its loyal fans will gladly tell you, Pickles has been a zinger-filled, laugh-out-loud gem since its debut in 1990. Since then, it has steadily climbed in popularity, and today appears in over 400 newspapers worldwide. Still Pickled After All These Years collects strips from this sweet intergenerational comic that alternates point of view between an older married couple, a 30-something married couple, and their son. The strip centers on Earl and Opal Pickles, who have been married over 50 years but inject plenty of spunk and insight into everything they do. Whether they're taking a wry but sympathetic glance at their divorced daughter, Sylvia, laughing at their faithful but feckless canine, Roscoe, marveling at their dictatorial feline, Muffin, or just commenting on the little things in life, Earl and Opal's good-natured wit and dry humor is brilliantly on target. Pickles is about growing old and keeping your sense of humor but never forgetting what it's like to be a child. The strip's inaugural AMP collection, Still Pickled After All These Years, encapsulates the importance of staying close to those who bring you the most joy and reminds everyone about the incalculable value of the unconditional love of pets, family, and friends.

Big Nate: The Crowd Goes Wild!

Por: Lincoln Peirce | Fecha: 2014

Aspiring cartoonist Nate Wright is the star of Big Nate, the daily and Sunday comic strip, which has been nationally syndicated since 1991. Nate is 11 years old, four-and-a-half feet tall, and the all-time record holder for detentions in school history. He's a self-described genius and sixth grade Renaissance Man. Nate, who lives with his dad and older sister, enjoys pestering his family and teachers with his sarcasm. To draw Big Nate, Peirce relies on memories of his own childhood and the experiences he collected teaching art at a New York City high school. Peirce occasionally turns his pen over to his creation, and readers get to see life through Nate's eyes as he doodles his adventures in his notebook.
