Ablaze Artist Spotlight: Manix Abrera
ABLAZE is proud to present two outstanding graphic novels by acclaimed Filipino cartoonist and three-time National Book Awardee Manix Abrera. This digital omnibus comes to you at a special price. In "12," Abrera tells twelve genuinely touching stories, each story with its own charm and intriguing twists - a young man spends his entire life searching for answers but shock awaits when he finally gets that eureka moment; someone finds love that unexpectedly finds somebody else; two men argue over who goes first on an escalator; a mother and daughter fight over a cockroach; a drunk man urinates on a tree and gets a big surprise - making you wonder how these mundane plots can turn out so bizarrely, prompting you to reflect and crave for more! In "14," a man who mysteriously discovers a 13th floor in his building and finds himself in the middle of a storytelling session among different mythological creatures of Philippine folklore. Together with a partying crowd of supernatural beings, he listens to stories narrated by creatures such as the Manananggal, Diwata, Tikbalang, Kapre, Tiyanak, and even by a White Lady and a Doppelganger.

Skip!: A Graphic Novel
Jay is always scribbling poetry in their notebook. When they come across Skip, a Double Dutch team, they befriend the members--and decide to join, too. For the first time ever, Jay has a place to belong--and friends to confide in. But Jay's friendship with their new bestie Beah is intense, both in and out of Double Dutch. As Beah and Jay help each other grow into the people they will become, it challenges their friendship and their own identities. This charming "slice of life" graphic novel is about accepting yourself, navigating "first love" friendship, and finding your own voice. It's rendered in debut author-illustrator Sarah Burgess's gorgeous art style ribboned with playful humor and sports drama. "Sequences snake across the page, mimicking the billowing of a jump rope, while sparingly employed structured panels zoom in on emotions or change perspective, complementing the fluid, motion-filled ambiance of Burgess's endearing debut." - Publisher's Weekly "A journey of self-discovery, creativity, and belonging centers a sweet, uplifting story of friendship and ambition." - Kirkus Reviews "This is, appropriately, not one to be skipped." - The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

All Tomorrow's Parties: The Velvet Underground Story
An examination of some of New York rock 'n' roll's most iconic figures--The Velvet Underground & Andy Warhol--and the relationship that distorted their lives and changed pop culture. 1 VOLUME RELEASED - INDEPENDENT STORIES. Born from the iconic NY art and music scene of the late '60s and the brilliant, untamed minds of its founding members Lou Reed and John Cale, The Velvet Underground are now considered rock 'n' roll royalty...but that wasn't always so. From surviving off oatmeal and donating blood for rent money, to the fame of being the de facto house band of Andy Warhol's Factory and the objects of the socialite's fleeting affection, to the unraveling of Cale and Reed's creative partnership in a storm of jealousy and paranoia, the Velvets' story is as bold, challenging, and fascinating as their music. Explore the story behind the group NYT called arguably the most influential American rock band of our time, through good times and bad, as captured by Eisner-nominated Koren Shadmi.

Light Carries On
When Leon's camera unexpectedly breaks, he is forced to borrow a used one from his mom's antique store. As he snaps the first picture, the ghost of the camera's former owner is released and the two are inexplicably linked. After taking Leon's body for an accidental joy ride, the ghost introduces himself as Cody, a queer punk rocker who died decades ago. Of course, he doesn't remember how he wound up dead but the two decide investigating might be the only way to end the haunting. Leon has been reeling from a recent break-up with his boyfriend, recovering from his time in the military, and trying to become a photographer who can afford to take pictures of something more than high school proms and weddings. So being the only one able to see and talk to a ghost that died before cellphones, Wikipedia, or iTunes seems like a great way to fill his ample free time. The two get closer as they travel around Chicago showing each other the landmarks of their pasts and trying to unearth the secrets around Cody's mysterious death. They discover they have much more in common than expected as they explore the complexities of life, love, and afterdeath, taking breaks to jam out to tunes, hang out in planetariums, and slurp down tasty frozen beverages. Cartoonist Ray Nadine (Station Six, Raise Hell, Messenger) has created an unmissable graphic novel that balances out themes of trauma, grief, and toxic relationships with radical empathy, queer joy, and healing.
