Non Sequitur: Why We'll Never Understand Each Other

Por: Wiley. Miller | Fecha: 2013

The only cartoon to win top awards in both the comic strip and comic panel categories from the National Cartoonists Society, Non Sequitur is also the only one to win in its first year of syndication. Non Sequitur has been entertaining fans for more than a decade, with its Twilight Zone of cartoon moments. Day after day, Non Sequitur hilariously jabs at the feats and foibles of life, skewering everyone from politicians to teenagers. Wiley's irreverent, satirical wit, combined with his superbly crafted illustrations, confirms that the universe is one big joke at humanity's expense. That said, some of Non Sequitur's most popular panels have been the ones where Wiley has offered his takes on "What he heard/what she said." In strip after strip, the cartoonist succinctly captures the absurd and unexpected miscommunications that lie at the heart of every relationship. For example: * What he heard: "Let's go drain the life force from your body." What she said: "Let's go shopping." * What he heard: "Honey, why don't you put your head in a vise and I'll turn the handle until your skull explodes." What she said: "Honey, why don't we turn off the TV and just talk." * What she heard: "Life as we know it will cease to exist unless you can alter the space-time continuum." What he said: "Honey, are you almost ready yet?" Everyone who's ever tried talking to anyone about anything will find Why We'll Never Understand Each Other to be the perfect way to laugh about it all, and maybe-or maybe not-try again.

Adam@home: Cafe Adam

Por: Brian. Basset | Fecha: 2013

When Brian Basset first created his strip, Adam, it had a Mr. Mom theme running through it. It was unusual at the time for a man to stay home while his wife played the corporate games-even if he was working-and Basset used the situation to its fullest comic potential. These days, however, home-based offices are increasingly common, and Basset finds he was merely leading a trend. That's one reason the creator of this charming cartoon changed the name of his strip last year to Adam@home. In this sixth collection, the one-time Mr. Mom focuses on a whole host of compatriots who hang out at the local coffee cafe, log in remotely, and compare work-at-home notes. In Cafe Adam, an all-new Adam@home collection, Basset mines the laughs in all sorts of home-office and coffee-house-based dramas, including keeping in good standing with the local barista (no jokes about the nose ring), dealing with client complaints by handing over the phone to a screaming infant son, and helping out his kids' class at school. He also revels in the little things, from changes the nearby Kopyko made for workers like himself to being able to attend an office Christmas party, even if it's virtual.Through it all, Adam's wife, Laura, who still has to show up for her job at a local bookstore, and his kids, Katy, Clayton, and Nick, help the Newman household retain its balance. An engaging family, the Newmans have become an essential source of amusement for Basset's countless fans.

Lio: Happiness Is a Squishy Cephalopod

Por: Mark. Tatulli | Fecha: 2013

"LIO is brilliant! In this post-Calvin and Hobbes and post-Far Side world, this is the brass ring for cool!"-Dallas Morning News * LIO is a pantomime strip featuring a curious young boy whose daydreams embark from reality destined for the dark chasm where wit and sarcasm collide. Drawn in the age-old style of pantomime strips, LIO offers a decidedly new and edgy twist to the wordless comic format. That's right, LIO is so crafty it doesn't need word balloons, dialogue boxes, or clever captions. Mark Tatulli's cartoon also employs a unique drawing style influenced by cartooning greats Gahan Wilson, Charles Addams, and 19th-century satirist A. J. Volck. * In describing his strip, Tatulli explains he was eager "to bring something truly different to the comics pages . . . something to appeal to all ages, drawn in pictures only. To tell a story without text, while updating the pantomime concept with a modern audience in mind." * The result is a mind-bendingly humorous and astute journey into the darkly detailed world of young LiO-where a spit wad can put a school bus out of commission faster than a spider can hamper the efforts of the U.S. Postal Service."

Get Fuzzy Vol #13 Ignorance, Thy Name Is Bucky

Por: Darby. Conley | Fecha: 2013

Chances are the warm fuzzies aren't what you will get when you pick up Ignorance, Thy Name Is Bucky. Instead, you'll get LOL moments as Darby Conley pumps hilarity into living the single life with pets. The family portrait: Rob Wilco, the tallest member of the family, is a single, mild-mannered ad executive who pays the bills and often the price, thanks to his curious and anthropomorphic housemates. Rob gives guidance and all sorts of "material" to Bucky, a temperamental cat, who clearly wears the fur pants in the family. Satchel, a good-hearted pooch, plays neutral, but usually ends up on the receiving end of Bucky's mischief. "Thanks for Get Fuzzy, the funniest comic strip on planet Earth. Sweet-natured Satchel Pooch and the utterly crazed Bucky B. Katt are much more fun than Odie and Garfield." --Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly * Three Get Fuzzy collections have become New York Times best-sellers: Bucky Katt's Big Book of Fun, Blueprint for Disaster, and Say Cheesy. * Recognized as Best Comic Strip in 2002 by the National Cartoonists Society.

Argyle Sweater: The Itty Bitty Knitty Committee

Por: Scott. Hilburn | Fecha: 2013

With more than one million greeting cards sold, Scott Hilburn's The Argyle Sweater dresses-up the funny page with an argyle-wearing assortment of cavemen, bears, moths, and pompadour-having humans, along with an occasional evil scientist. Boasting a readership ranging from The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times to the Calgary Herald, Hilburn's colorful cartoon panel fuses his visceral talent and bold pen stroke. What results is a cerebrally astute cartoon panel that comments on popular culture, human nature, and sporks in a clever, spontaneously rich way.

If You Loved Me You'd Think This Was Cute

Por: Nick. Galifianakis | Fecha: 2013

Everyone knows the only thing more painful than relationships is not having them--or is it the other way around? Whatever, says author and cartoonist Nick Galifianakis. In his first book, If You Loved Me, You'd Think This Was Cute: Uncomfortably True Cartoons About You, he makes the case that either way, the only recourse is to embrace our frailties and laugh. Taken from Carolyn Hax's nationally syndicated advice column, this compilation spins the pain of dating, mothers-in-law, "beneficial" friends and more into ... the pain of self-recognition. The intricately drawn pen-and-ink panels and pointed captions explore some of life's most uncomfortable truths, exposing the humanity in our mistakes, the underbelly of our triumphs and the sheer heroism of trying and trying again. Throughout this character study of men and women (and the dogs who love them), Galifianakis mines our hopes and insecurities for a unifying truth: If we can't laugh at ourselves, he'll do it for us. "Nick snuck me into my first comedy club when I was only a back-acned teenager. The back acne went away but the comedy stuck. I know that last sentence sounds like a lyric from a Joan Baez song, but trust me, it's original." --Zach Galifianakis, from the foreword "Nick's cartoons are funny, witty, and smart. But what makes them so special are how universal and true they are, making the laughs they bring all the more poignant. Relationships, in all their glory, have never been captured quite so succinctly and with such charm." --Amy B. Harris, writer/producer for Sex and the City "Nick Galifianakis understands relationships unbelievably well, for a guy. My guess is he actually menstruates." --Gene Weingarten, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Washington Post humor columnist
