Like their father, Prof. Lawrence Miller (aka The Shepherd), Lexi and her little brother Nico are lightning rods for those in need. One such person arrives at their door-a little girl named Vee. The child has recently escaped from a vicious killer. Traumatized, the girl explains that when she was taken, she was carrying a gift for her mother. During escape, it was left behind. Now, Vee wants it back. In The Pit, Lexi and Nico are visited by a spectral dog, a victim of a local dog-fighting ring. Yet, despite his brutal death, the spirit is determined to free the surviving animals still imprisoned. What follows is a desperate rescue attempt that penetrates the heart of darkness.
