The aging Sigmund Freud reflects upon the torments of age, the lung cancer he suffers due to his cigar addiction, and the rise of Nazism. 1 VOLUME RELEASED - INDEPENDENT STORIES. In 1923, Sigmund Freud, 67 years old and an inveterate cigar smoker, discovers that he has mouth cancer, a truth long hidden from him by doctors. Despite his diagnosis, Freud survived 15 more years, convinced the cigars that were slowly destroying him increased his productivity and gave him control over himself. At the same time, a different sort of cancer was consuming Europe. In 1933, Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany, annexing Freud's home country of Austria five years later. His books burning upon fascist pyres and his peers concerned for his life, Freud had no choice but to leave Vienna for London, his final home. With accuracy and sobriety, Suzanne Leclair and William Roy reveal a raw and nuanced portrait of the controversial father of psychoanalysis in his last days.

Brontë
Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte--faced with an ailing father and an alcoholic brother--pursue independence through art in this graphic vision of the lives of three legendary writers. Despite their family's stormy fortunes, the Bronte sisters resolved to write. To thwart the nineteenth century's double standards, they took the names of men, becoming the Bell brothers. Their works incited controversy and speculation, while at home, the sisters contended with the rages of Branwell Bronte, their self-destructive sibling. Manuela Santoni presents a time before Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall were known as literary masterpieces, when winds shook the Bronte house and determination held it together.

When you think about atoms, chances are you think of Niels Bohr's model. But beyond that model (which he soon left behind...since it's wrong!) his life and discoveries blazed the trail from a world without cars or radio, much less airplanes and television, to one of space travel and the World Wide Web.

Golden Boy: Beethoven's Youth
A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard SelectionMaster cartoonist Mikael Ross (The Thud) tells the story of Beethoven from 1778 to his first major public appearance in Vienna in 1795. It begins when the family is living a difficult life in Bonn. Father Johann battles with alcoholism and is deep in debt. Only young Ludwig and his talent at the piano offer any hope for the future -- if only he would stop composing his own pieces and just play what's expected of him.Author Ross was asked to do a small comic for the Beethoven Society. Through this opportunity, he discovered the diaries of the baker's son that lived downstairs from Beethoven's family, the content of which inspired Golden Boy. As in his previous book, The Thud, Ross skillfully mixes humor with empathy and pure social drama, crafting a coming-of-age story that transcends its biographical subject matter. His colorful, expressive style and mastery of the language of comics are perfectly suited to the tall task of capturing Beethoven's timeless music visually.
