The Universe and You

Por: Suzanne. Slade | Fecha: 2024

During the night, as we sleep, a beautiful celestial dance is taking place. While Earth seems solid and still, it's actually spinning on its axis and circling the sun. Joining Earth in this orbit around the sun are the other seven planets in our solar system, along with dozens of moons and millions of comets and asteroids. Containing our solar system is the wondrous Milky Way galaxy, with its billions of stars, just like our own sun, swirling and whirling around. And on from there are the billions of galaxies with their own stars swirling and whirling into the ever-expanding space called our universe. When the sun rises on a brand new day, the dance continues. Through lyrical text, award-winning science writer Suzanne Slade (June Almeida, Virus Detective! The Woman Who Discovered the First Human Coronavirus) takes young readers on an exploration of our solar system, galaxies beyond, and finally the universe as a whole. Back matter includes science facts.

Everyone must do their part to help the war effort. Victory gardens are planted and scrap metal is collected. "It's the biggest event in our history. And it involves every single adult, every single boy, and every single girl," says Polly's teacher. As Polly struggles to make sense of the war, she wonders how she can contribute. When the government puts out a notice requesting peach pits to be used in gas mask filters, Polly knows how she can help.

The Ghouls' Guide to Good Grammar

Por: Mary. Sullivan | Fecha: 2024

Grammar can be confusing, no matter if you're an adult, a child, or well . . . even a ghoul. And its rules can be hard to remember or keep straight. Ghastly things can happen when a comma or even a simple period is misplaced. But never fear! We have the perfect book to help you keep your head and your cool. In The Ghouls' Guide to Good Grammar basic rules of grammar such as correct punctuation and appropriate word choices are explained from a monster's point of view. For example, see how a simple comma clears up any misunderstanding between Vanessa and her parents. "Vanessa Vampire loves cooking, her parents, and her baby sister" versus "Vanessa Vampire loves cooking her parents and baby sister." For anyone needing a refresher course on how to use a hyphen or an apostrophe, or is confused by pesky contractions, The Ghouls' Guide to Good Grammar is for you. After all, choosing the right word and the right punctuation to use is as important as picking the right human being to eat for dinner. Back matter includes a short grammar quiz.

Winged Wonders: Solving the Monarch Migration Mystery

Por: Meeg. Pincus | Fecha: 2024

2020 Finalist AAAS/Subaru American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru 2020 EUREKA Excellence in Nonfiction Awards - Honoree Winner Best of 2020 Picture Book New Releases - Innovative Nonfiction Category The Original Art 2020 Nominee For decades, as the monarch butterflies swooped through every year like clockwork, people from Canada to the United States to Mexico wondered, "Where do they go?" In 1976 the world learned the answer: after migrating thousands of miles, the monarchs roost by the millions in an oyamel grove in Central Mexico's mountains. But who solved this mystery? Was it the scientist or the American adventurer? The citizen scientists or the teacher or his students? Winged Wonders shows that the mystery could only be solved when they all worked as a team--and reminds readers that there's another monarch mystery today, one that we all must work together to solve.

Ticktock Banneker's Clock

Por: David C.. Gardner | Fecha: 2024

Throughout his life, Benjamin Banneker was known and admired for his work in science, mathematics, and astronomy, just to name a few pursuits. But even when he was born in Maryland in 1731, he was already an extraordinary person for that time period. He was born free at a time in America when most African Americans were slaves. Though he only briefly attended school and was largely self-taught, at a young age Benjamin displayed a keen aptitude for mathematics and science. Inspired by a pocket watch he had seen, at the age of 22 he built a strike clock based on his own drawings and using a pocket-knife. This picture book biography focuses on one episode in a remarkable life.

But a friend lets her in on a secret (he has a hole too!) and shows her the best way to repair holes: spend time on friends, family, the things you love, yourself, and kindness. Those patches don't make the hole go away, but they help. A lyrical and age-appropriate story for learning to cope with grief and loss.
