Mackinac Bridge

Por: Gloria. Whelan | Fecha: 2024

Set in the late 1950s, this is the moving story of a young boy whose father operates a ferryboat between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas. As young Mark witnesses the building of the new Mackinac Bridge, he is torn between family loyalty and eager anticipation. He can't help being awestruck by the majesty of the five-mile-long bridge that will connect the two peninsulas and change the lives of so many. But the Mighty Mac will also put Mark's father out of business. As his father struggles with the flow of progress, Mark dreams of future bridges he will build. Details of the complex construction of the bridge will fascinate children as they learn an important part of America's history and come to understand the meaning of change. The Mackinac Bridge Authority provides history notes at the back of the book.

Minnow and Rose

Por: Bill. Farnsworth | Fecha: 2024

In the mid-1800s thousands of pioneers crossed the western plains of the United States using the 2,000-mile pathway called the Oregon Trail. Minnow and her family live in one of the many native villages scattered across the plains. She has a lively sense of adventure and her favorite pastime is swimming in the nearby river where she rightly earns her nickname. Rose and her family are traveling in one of the many wagon trains making their way west. It's been a tedious journey with little excitement. Rose can't wait for something thrilling to happen. And one day it does. On the banks of a rushing river that divides one way of life from another, two very different cultures come face-to-face, with life-changing results. In addition to writing children's books, Judy Young teaches poetry writing workshops for children and educators across the country. Her other books with Sleeping Bear Press include the popular R is for Rhyme: A Poetry Alphabet and The Lucky Star. Judy lives near Springfield, Missouri. A graduate of the Ringling School of Art and Design, Bill Farnsworth has created paintings for magazines, advertisements, children's books, and fine art commissions. He has illustrated more than 50 children's books and his book awards include a Teachers' Choice Award, the 2005 Patricia Gallagher Award, and the 2007 Volunteer State Book Award. Bill lives in Venice, Florida.

Earthdivers, Vol 1: Kill Columbus

Por: Stephen Graham. Jones | Fecha: 2025

The New York Times-bestselling author of The Only Good Indians and My Heart Is a Chainsaw makes his comics debut with this time-hopping horror thriller about far-future Indigenous outcasts on a mission to kill Christopher Columbus. The year is 2112, and it's the apocalypse exactly as expected: rivers receding, oceans rising, civilization crumbling. Humanity has given up hope, except for a group of Indigenous outcasts who have discovered a time travel portal in a cave in the desert and figured out where everything took a turn for the worst: America. Convinced that the only way to save the world is to rewrite its past, they send one of their own--a reluctant linguist named Tad--on a bloody, one-way mission to 1492 to kill Christopher Columbus before he reaches the so-called New World. But there are steep costs to disrupting the timeline, and taking down an icon isn't an easy task for an academic with no tactical training and only a wavering moral compass to guide him. As the horror of the task ahead unfolds and Tad's commitment is tested, his actions could trigger a devastating new fate for his friends and the future. Join Stephen Graham Jones and artist Davide Gianfelice for Earthdivers, Vol. 1, the beginning of an unforgettable ongoing sci-fi slasher spanning centuries of America's Colonial past to explore the staggering forces of history and the individual choices we make to survive it.

Parallel

Por: Ivanka. Hahnenberger | Fecha: 2023

In Parallel, creator Matthias Lehmann deftly explores the complexities of being gay at a time when queer relationships were forbidden. Torn between his longing for a family and his simultaneous desire for gay love, Karl Kling hides his homosexuality from his wife and child while pursuing male romances in 1950s Germany. Karl Kling's story is one of revelations, and these he has addressed in a letter to his daughter, Hella, who had disowned Karl many years ago. Karl's letter is a cri de coeur from a father to a daughter he never really got to know, and he comes clean to her about his failed marriages, his fractured family relations--and his love for men. Taking place between the end of World War II and the 1980s, Parallel chronicles Karl's efforts to comply with social norms in order to keep his sexuality a secret. It also paints a picture of a life torn between conformity and rebellion, and the cruel realities of twentieth-century German society, where homosexuality was proscribed and punishable until 1994. Matthias Lehmann poignantly depicts the story of a decades-long yearning to live an open and free life, and the price Karl and those he loves must pay for it. It is also a story of finding the courage to finally tell the truth no matter the obstacles...or the cost.

Falling In Love On The Path To Hell Vol 1

Por: Gerry. Duggan | Fecha: 2025

FALLING IN LOVE ON THE PATH TO HELL has it all--otherworldly intrigue, gunslingers and samurai, the dead, the dying, the undead, and of course...romance. The sun set on samurai and gunslingers at roughly the same time, but our two leads didn't die off quietly. In the East, a samurai would rather die with her weapons than surrender them to a sword hunt. In the West, the gunslinger follows his revenge to the bitter end. The future lovers are mortally wounded a world apart and awake together in a purgatory ruled by a ruthless society of damned warriors. Asami and MacRaith will need to overcome the dead, the dying, and the undead. Can love redeem them? This first volume is violent, mysterious, thrilling, and sexy. From GERRY DUGGAN (X-Men, Deadpool) and GARRY BROWN (Babyteeth). Collects the oversized first issues of FALLING IN LOVE ON THE PATH TO HELL # 1-4

Lackadaisy

Por: Tracy J. Butler | Fecha: 2025

It's 1927 and Prohibition is in full effect. On the record, the nation is dry, but the glory days are at hand for an unassuming cafe on a quaint St. Louis side street. Beneath its tile floors is a subterranean saloon - the Lackadaisy Speakeasy, where the spirits are still high and available on tap. Or at least they were until calamity rocked the establishment's foundations. Now, some jazz band riffraff and a beleaguered veteran are all that remain to pick up the pieces of the past... along with some decent bootleg booze. If the Lackadaisy is to survive this and the advances of its ferocious rivals, a little bit of creative chaos might be in order.
