The distribution of Anthurium atramentarium in Colombia is expanded, this specie had been reported as endemic from Antioquia department. The necessity to develop strategies to protect species of Anthurium with black spathe that are distributed in Colombia is mentioned.

The database of aquatic insects collected from freshwater systems in the departments of Antioquia, Arauca, Bolívar, Boyacá, Caldas, Cauca, Córdoba, La Guajira, Santander and Sucre is described. The biological material presented here was part of different projects, such as environmental consulting, as well as field sampling by both undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Institute of Biology, University of Antioquia. The Antioquia’s University Limnology Collection, CLUA-035 has 3209 standardized lots published in online databases that are distributed among 11 orders, 91 families and 235 genera. However, Neuroptera and Orthoptera orders were not identified to lower taxonomic levels.

In a study conducted between the months of July and December of 2012, two patches of tropical dry forest from the geographic valley of the Cauca river (Colindres-Jamundi and Las Chatas-Buga) were followed. To collect the data, point counts and transects were used; additionally mist nets were used for the recognition of small and inconspicuous birds. 2364 birds, corresponding to 1462 records, divided into 76 species, 27 families and 16 orders were observed. The family with the greatest number of species was Tyrannidae (14), followed by Thraupidae (seven), then Ardeidae (five) and Picidae (five). In the Chatas Forest 51 species, grouped among 20 families were found, while in the Colindres Forest 59 species, grouped among 25 families were found. The data presented, contributes to the knowledge regarding the actual diversity of the bird population that still exists in two of the few patches of tropical dry forest remaining in the geographic valley of the Cauca river, and its relationship with the size and type of matrix surrounding these patches. These data could be taken into account for the design of management and conservation strategies of the dry forest, to mitigate the damage done by the monoculture of sugarcane and human intervention in general, responsible for its high vulnerability.

In Colombia the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) has few records above 2000 m.a.s.l. We present a record of Glossy Ibis in the Fúquene Lagoon, Cundinamarca, Colombia, at 2600 m.a.s.l. which represents the first sighting of this bird in this wetland.

The echinoderms present in the reference collection of the Museum of Sciences University El Bosque were collected during various field trips by students of Biology program at Cabo de la Vela between 2005 and 2010. The specimens were reviewed and identified using different keys and taxonomic guides and confirmed by specialists. A total of 107 specimens, distributed in 9 orders, 11 families 12 genus and 17 species was obtained.

Being consistent with the world latest innovations regarding biodiversity data publishing and scientific papers, the SiB Colombia and Biota Colombiana attended for the worldwide call “Activities to enrich metadata and promote the publication of data paper”. This activity took place in late 2012 and was offered by the Global Biodiversity information Facility Secretariat (GBIF), with the aim of support proposals to promote worldwide the publication of Data Papers, papers about biodiversity data. In this way we are pleased to report that the SiB Colombia and Biota Colombiana were granted by the call in Latin America. Thus, with the support of GBIF and implementation by the SiB, Biota Colombiana now includes a special section of data papers. These types of papers are academic publications that have arisen as a mechanism to encourage the publication of biodiversity data, achieving scholarly and professional recognition for people involved in generating and managing biodiversity information. The data papers should describe as best as possible the Whom, What, Where, When, Why and How to document and record data, without becoming the instrument to make a detailed analysis of the data, as happens in other academic publications. The innovation and improvement of this publishing model relies on the manuscript being always connected to the dataset through a link providing the persistent and reliable web repository of the biodiversity information publishing platform of SiB Colombia. With the incorporation of this model Biota Colombiana is placed at the vanguard in scientific publications, being the first Latin American journal that incorporates this model and one of the top fifteen worldwide, among which are the journals of Pensoft publishing house.

New records of sixteen species of water bugs are reported, belonging to 10 genera and seven families. Expansions of the geographical distribution are presented for 12 species and three species are recorded for the first time from Colombia: Ovatametra fusca Kenaga, 1942; Ovatametra gualeguay Bachmann, 1966 and Pseudosaldula saxicola Schuh and Polhemus, 2009, a diagnose and illustrations are included for each one of these species. Maps show the geographical distribution of all species.

Urban domestic gardens contain an important diversity of plants, which provide habitat and food for the animals that live in cities. In order to recognize the diversity of plants in domestic gardens of Bogotá, D.C., seven localities that represent the city landscape diversity were selected. In each locality we inventoried the plant diversity of ten houses. 4110 individuals, 238 species (grasses, shrubs, trees, vines and epiphytes) and 85 families were recorded. A list and a photo catalogue with all species is provided for the first time.

The presence of the giant African snail Achatina fulica (Bowdich 1822) was confirmed in Colombia in 2008. Due to economic and health implications of this species and the difficulties in controlling it, it is essential to establish the relevance of protocols and alternative inexpensive substances used to control the snail. In this research, the effectiveness of manual removal and manual removal with spray of calcium oxide was analyzed. Both techniques had similar efficiencies, so it is recommended that calcium oxide should be implemented only for the disposal of the collected individuals in order to reduce costs and decrease the impact on arthropofauna. In addition, we evaluated the molluscicide ability of commercial sodium hypochlorite, two plant extracts (Tabebuia rosea and Jatropha curcas), and commercial molluscicide (metaldehyde). We found that the three alternative substances were effective as molluscicides, but with lower effectiveness than the commercial substance. Implementation of the extracts of T. rosea and J. curcas is recommended because they have low cost, and do not present negative effects on the environment.

Se presentan los resultados de una caracterización rápida de los anuros presentes en ocho localidades de los complejos paramunos de Los Nevados, Chilí-Barragán y Las Hermosas, ubicados en los departamentos de Quindío, Valle del Cauca y Tolima, cordillera Central de Colombia. Registramos 263 individuos pertenecientes a 11 especies de anuros de las familias Craugastoridae y Bufonidae. La riqueza local fue pobre (3-5 especies) pero la mayoría de especies (8 de 11) son endémicas para Colombia y al menos dos (Osornophryne percrassa y Pristimantis simoteriscus) están catalogadas con algún riesgo de amenaza. La mayoría de especies son de actividad nocturna-arbórea y reproducción terrestre; se amplía el rango de distribución conocido para tres especies (Pristimantis simoterus, Pristimantis obmutescens, Pristimantis vicarius). Además, presentamos un compendio actualizado de los anuros registrados en el ecosistema de páramo de Colombia. Nuestros registros contribuyen con información básica sobre la presencia actual de especies en estos ecosistemas y aportan a una línea base para el establecimiento de eventuales planes de monitoreo.
