Kalevala: The Graphic Novel

Por: Sami. Makkonen | Fecha: 2024

BEFORE THE HOBBIT, THE LORD OF THE RINGS, AND GAME OF THRONES THERE WAS THE EPIC THAT INSPIRED IT ALL! A stunning comic adaptation of the epic The Kalevala, which inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings. It's the foundational epic of the fantasy genre. The story tells of the adventures and fates of wizard Vainamoinen, warrior Lemminkainen, blacksmith Ilmarinen and other larger-than-life characters seeking love, riches, and magic in the faraway lands of the ancient North. This is a bold approach to Kalevala by an established talent - visually powerful and accessible. Sami Makkola is bringing Kalevala to a whole different level and emphasizing the elements of horror in Kalevala, which are often left in the background when only the main events of Kalevala are discussed. Sami Makkola is internationally renowned. He has received the Sarjas Award for Best Fantasy Comic and has been nominated for a number of other awards, including the Ghastly Awards for horror work. His awards include: Sarjakuvantekijat RY award 2007 (Sarjas Award for Best Fantasy Comic) Independent Publisher Book Awards Graphic Novel/Drawn Book - Drama/Documentary 2010 Independent Publisher Book Awards Graphic Novel/Drawn Book - Drama/Documentary 2011 USA Best Book Award Comics: Graphic Novels 2013

King: A Comics Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr

Por: Ho Che. Anderson | Fecha: 2022

This groundbreaking body of comics journalism collects Anderson's entire biography of the renowned civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Over a decade in the making, the saga has been praised for its vivid recreation of one of the most tumultuous periods in U.S. history and for its accuracy in depicting the personal and public lives of King, from his birth to his assassination. King probes the life story of one of America's greatest public figures with an unflinchingly critical eye, casting King as an ambitious, dichotomous figure deserving of his place in history but not above moral sacrifice to get there. Anderson's expressionistic visual style is wrought with dramatic energy; panels evoke a painterly attention to detail but juxtapose with one another in such a way as to propel King's story with cinematic momentum. Anderson's successful use of the graphic novel to tell a major work of nonfiction has drawn favorable comparisons to Art Spiegelman's Maus: A Survivor's Tale, Joe Sacco's Palestine, and Osamu Tezuka's Adolph. King not only recreates the major events in King's public life, but chronicles the daily, rough-and-tumble, behind-the-scenes political maneuverings and strategic compromises that were required to mobilize millions of people toward a common goal. His internal debates with Ralph Abernathy and Jesse Jackson and his hardball negotiations with John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson are dramatized. Anderson's achievement is not merely a political biography filled with names and dates, but a fully rounded portrait of a fallible human engaged in a superhuman effort his fears, his doubts, his relationship with his wife Coretta King, and his children are compassionately and truthfully rendered. Anderson's visual approach includes the use of photographs, realistic portraiture, and expressionistic imagery alternating between stark black and white chiaroscuro and painterly full color. The dialogue is unflinchingly naturalistic and accurately reflects the moral urgency and labyrinthine political and practical complexities that King was navigating, from his deeply felt, personal commitment to a public cause to the wider political eruptions the country was experiencing. This is a respectful, unsparing, truthful biography of a man and his times that captures the moral and political gravitas of the cause as well as its human dimension. A major work of comics, depicting a major work of history.

Watch Dogs Tokyo, Vol #3

Por: Seiichi. Shirato | Fecha: 2025

This is the thrilling final volume of the sci-fi manga series inspired by hit Ubisoft franchise Watch Dogs! The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is planning on instituting the newest version of its futuristic urban infrastructure management system, J-ctOS 2.0, and Inspector Goda Gordan and hacker activist group DEDSEC must expose the underbelly before it's too late. Alongside a yakuza-hired fixer named Yamanoi, Goda and SSB come up with a plan to exchange Yamanoi's life for the vital information needed to expose Blume, the government, and the harm that J-ctOS 2.0 will cause. The only issue is that Blume Japan is willing to do just about anything to keep that from happening. Will DEDSEC be able to survive the trap waiting for them? Or will Blume be the end of DEDSEC, once and for all? "It's a great-looking manga with detailed backgrounds that bring the futuristic setting to life. It's like a fun action flick, albeit one you've probably seen before: scrappy underdogs taking on the world when it didn't seem like they had a chance." -- Lauren Ortini, Anime News Network
