Manix Abrera's 14

Por: Manix. Abrera | Fecha: 01/01/2022

ABLAZE proudly presents "14," the second silent graphic novel created by Filipino comic artist, Manix Abrera. Winner of a National Book Award (Category: Wordless Graphic Literature) in 2015, awarded by the National Book Development Board and Manila Critics Circle. 14 tells the story of a human who mysteriously discovers a 13th floor in his building and finds himself in the middle of a storytelling session among different mythological creatures of Philippine folklore. Together, with a partying crowd of supernatural beings, he listens to stories narrated by creatures such as the Manananggal, Diwata, Tikbalang, Kapre, Tiyanak, and even by a White Lady and a Doppelganger. 14 is a grand narrative of weird yet wonderful tales, humorous albeit dark and spooky, surreal but unarguably true to the emotions of the heart. Using absolutely no words in this graphic novel, Manix successfully tells the stories through careful planning of each scene and sequence. Frame by frame, panel by panel, Manix effectively renders each scene in detail and maximizes the power of images to completely convey the stories and emotions he wants to evoke in his readers. It is now up to you, the reader, to notice these details, to savor each frame, page by page until the big picture and meaning unfold sans the usual text balloons. Sounds mind-blowing!

Alter Ego 2 Fouad

Por: Denis. Lapière | Fecha: 01/01/2023

How does a volunteer for a humanitarian aid program turn into a terrorist? While Fouad, a Belgian nurse, is working for a humanitarian mission to stamp out AIDS in deepest darkest Columbia, he is witness to a kidnapping. A bit of delving soon leads him to fear the worst. What if the WWOA (World War on Aids), the world renowned foundation he's employed by, were using this admirable campaign to eradicate AIDS as a facade for another, much more sinister project? What if they were actually using the populations of developing countries as guinea pigs for pharmaceutical experiments? Fouad could just go on with his life as though he hadn't seen anything. That would probably be better for him. But that's just not really his style...Series creator Pierre-Paul Renders has gone deep for this story, and between you and me Id love to get a look at his notebook. How he and co-writer Denis Lapiere are able to tell such detailed stories, each lining up next to and often intertwined with the five other books, is nothing short of a miracleThe Pullbox

One Beautiful Spring Day

Por: Jim. Woodring | Fecha: 01/01/2022

Jim Woodring has been chronicling the adventures of his cartoon Everyman, Frank, for almost 30 years. These stories are a singular rarity in the comics form both bone-chillingly physical in their depictions of Franks travails and profoundly metaphysical at the same time. Not since George Herrimans Krazy Kat has the comics language been so exquisitely distilled into pure, revelatory aesthetic expression. One Beautiful Spring Day combines three previously published volumes Congress of the Animals, where Frank embarked upon a life-changing voyage of discovery, Fran, where he learned, then forgot, that things are not always what they seem, and Poochytown in which Frank demonstrated his dizzying capacity for both nobility and ignominy along with 100 dazzling new pages conceived and drawn by the author. The result is a seamless, 400 page graphic narrative that forges a new and even more poignantly realized single story that takes readers deep into the hidden meanings of the previous stories and offers the most full, complete, astonishing exposition of Frank and his supercharged world to date. Franks curiosity and risk-taking mixed with a dose of, lets face it, wanton recklessness, takes him on a series of terrifying peregrinations that often leave his soul and body shattered, and the reader in a state of creative exaltation. Suffice to say that if you are a friend to Frank you will find One Beautiful Spring Day to be a thousand-course feast of agonizing bliss, soul-stirring mystery and luminous depth. This is undoubtedly one of the great novels of the 21st century, graphic or otherwise.

Pirate Penguin vs Ninja Chicken Vol #1

Por: Ray. Friesen | Fecha: 01/01/2016

Pirate Penguin vs. Ninja Chicken (Book 1): Troublems with Frenemies. So what is this book about? It's about a Pirate Penguin named Pirate Penguin and a Ninja Chicken who isn't (ninjas are too sneaky to let you know their real names. Hint: It isn't Harold.) They are the bestest of friends and also the worstest of enemies all at the same time (just like in real life! Only more cartoony of course.) I think you'll like this book, there are about a bajillion jokes inside, and it's filled with action, adventure and arguments. Sometimes the stories are really teeny, about stuff like ice cream or origami, and sometimes the story gets really epic-tastic, filled with spaceships and giant monsters and evil koalas and stuff (just like real life!). Plus, being about pirates, there are at least 17 swordfights (that's the rule with pirates). You'll just have to go ahead and read it to see if you like it, I've run out of back cover room to convince you how awesome it is anyway. (How awesome? SO AWESOME!)
